“Hearts and Minds in Harmony”

Pasifika Togetherness

At St Peter Chanel Parish Centre on 3 August parents, girls and teachers gathered to share a meal, ideas and entertainment.  A sumptuous meal was prepared by the girls.  Group talk about expectations for school were shared and the Pasifika group performed items for everybody at the end of the evening.  It was a wonderful night celebrating the special contribution Pasifika families make to Sacred Heart College.

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau,

Our Special Catholic Character is being nourished through numerous avenues; staff shared a full morning at the start of term focusing on the French origins and Napier history of Sacred Heart, and then under the leadership of Sister Natalie RSM, we reflected and shared insights into our personal spirituality.  The girls have been celebrating Form Level Masses once a term, each Year 9 class has undertaken a Retreat,  Year 12 visited churches with prominent architecture and stained glass features and Year 13 viewed the movie “Amazing Grace”.  These occasions and the weekly Assembly, and daily Form Time prayer, give tangible expression to the essential reason for our existence.

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority has announced that from this year, students at all levels of NCEA will be able to gain their NCEA with a Merit or Excellence endorsement.  For an NCEA Certificate to be endorsed with Merit, the student must gain 50 credits at Merit or Excellence.  For an NCEA Certificate to be endorsed with Excellence, the students must gain 50 credits at Excellence.  The purpose of these endorsements is to encourage students to strive to produce high quality work and recognise their achievement.  It will challenge and reward our girls.

Attendance at school is absolutely critical.  Regular absences affect learning and achievement.  This message has been highlighted to the girls at Assembly; please support our full attendance expectations by not condoning the ‘sicky’.

Unfortunately for Sacred Heart College, Mr Mike Perry has tendered his resignation to take up a senior position with the Correspondence School in Wellington.  Mike’s influence in the special character, academic and co-curricular life of the school will be hugely missed.  A consequence of his new appointment is the loss of Mrs Cynthia Perry, our Librarian, who will depart at the end of the year.  Cynthia has also been a stalwart in all that we offer at Sacred Heart.

Recent adjustments for the provision of healthy and nutritious food have already been addressed in our Canteen.   Our Canteen Committee has streamlined the food on sale so that it all meets healthy options for students.  Telecom’s decision to terminate the ‘School Connection’ will negatively impact upon our information technology spending power.  Points can still be accrued until January 1 2008 so keep making those long toll calls!  Enclosed are new arrangements for the order of school uniforms and the operating hours for the Uniform Shop.  Start up dates for school for 2008 are also enclosed  so holiday times can be planned accordingly.

We have designated the focus for Term 3 to be academic.  While exciting sporting and cultural activities reach their finales, it is important that all girls are giving quality time to homework and revision.  Senior classes will sit school exams in preparation for NCEA in three weeks.  Your support and encouragement for your daughter’s academic goals is an important factor in achievement.

School life is great; share all of its richness and give praise to God for these gifts.

Regards and God’s blessings  — Steve Bryan, Principal

Text Box: Special Character

Apologies : In our June Newsletter the Editor missed out congratulations to Nicola Mann, Rochelle Bills and Dayle Fulton on their Confirmation.  Well done girls.

Congratulations to Ashleigh Neave for gaining 3rd place in the U3A Speech Competitions.

Congratulations to Christina Noetzli. Results from the National Bank Junior Mathematics Competition have arrived and Christina gained a Top 200 award. This means she was placed in the top 200 of the approximately 3500 Year 10 students from throughout New Zealand who entered the competition.

Peer Support:  This is a planned programme which trains Yr13 students in personal awareness and facilitation skills. It encourages them to understand and appreciate the similarities and differences among people.  These trained leaders are then able to offer support to Yr9 students using group activities to develop co-operation and self-confidence among those new to the secondary school environment and help them in their relationships with peers, friends and family.

Junior Social: Our second Junior Social was held on Friday 10 August at St John’s College.  The theme was “Characters”.  We had bunnies, Paris Hiltons, Daisy Duke, Devils and Tele Tubbies!  The night was a great success with good music, great dancing and the best attitudes from the students!  Thanks to Whaea Stewart, Mr Brown and all the staff and Yr13’s who helped to organise, supervise and clean up after the night.

“Godspell”

Twenty-one Sacred Heart girls performed in “Godspell”, the combined St John’s and Sacred Heart production staged earlier this term. Four girls were in the band, twelve in the chorus and five took lead roles: Helena Brown as Robin, Maggie Johnson as Gilmer, Toni Makea as Sonia, Elizabeth Neilson as Joanne and Morgan Pederson as Peggy.  After a demanding ten week rehearsal schedule the cast turned on four lively and polished performances. The audiences really enjoyed the show and the cast obviously had a great time – they’re still singing the songs!

Text Box: Sport

Term 3 has been a busy time sport-wise.  Girls competed in the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ Singles and Doubles Badminton Champs and 3 girls competed in the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ Squash Championships.  Twelve students also volunteered to umpire Netball at the St Patrick’s Netball tournament late in Term 2.

Wanganui Exchange: On Wednesday 1 August, we were delighted to host our annual sports’ exchange with Cullinane College.  It was a beautiful day for sport and after tough competition it was a draw between our two colleges.  The results were as follows:

  Hockey                              6                                          5

Te Toa Hockey Tournament: On Friday 27 July our 1st XI Hockey team travelled to New Plymouth for the three day annual Te Toa Hockey Tournament.  During the course of the weekend, we played St Joseph’s Maori Girls College, Sacred Heart College, Hamilton, Lower Hutt and New Plymouth.  The games were played in quite contrasting conditions as the weekend progressed.  Our team would like to thank Ms Lewis for giving her time to accompany us, Mr and Mrs Johansen for their support and awesome cheering, Mrs Wallace for feeding us so well and rubbing us down and particularly our coaches, Te Paea and Deborah.  Thank you for sticking by us. Your knowledge and support have given our team a huge confidence boost and our skill levels have improved so much.  Last but not least, thanks to the girls.  Without you our team wouldn’t be possible.  Your commitment, attitude and passion over the weekend was amazing –thank you!

           - Annabel Wallace

Our team won the Fair Play Award—Congratulations!

Canoe Polo:  Fast, high intensity, team building, adrenalin pumping, physical activity that is guaranteed fun fitness—Interested??  This year we have three canoe polo teams made up of various year levels and abilities; Senior ’B’,  ’C’ and ’D’.

I encourage anybody who is interested in playing, or just seeing and learning what this sport is about, to come along and support our teams at the Clive pool on Tuesday and Sunday nights.  The excitement and noise give supporters on the sidelines a ‘pumping and intense’ night as they sit on the edge of their seats.  Canoe polo would not be possible without the commitment of somebody very special to the players.  Mrs Pearce’s commitment is massive to this sport.  Through her passion she has upped the abilities and performance of individuals incredibly.  We have several rolling players now, paddles and balls belonging to school, enabling us to be able to practice—urging improvement.  On behalf of every student that has been or is involved with canoe polo I would like to thank Mrs Pearce for her huge contribution and commitment to a sport we all love so much.
