Pasifika Togetherness At St Peter Chanel Parish Centre on Thursday, 31 July parents, girls and teachers gathered to share a meal, ideas and entertainment. A sumptuous meal was enjoyed. Group talk about Values and Visions of Sacred Heart College and its students were shared and the Pasifika group performed items for everybody’s enjoyment. It was a wonderful night celebrating the contribution Pasifika families make to Sacred Heart College. |

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau, Last Friday we celebrated the Feast of the Assumption. Father Simon led us in Mass and we reflected on the place of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, in our lives. We offer our prayers and support for our students engaged in Sacramental programmes. Eight girls are preparing for Baptism and twenty two girls will receive Confirmation in Parishes this weekend. Term 3 is in full swing and by the time you receive this there will be less than ten school weeks before our seniors leave for NCEA examinations. Juniors have formal school exams (Yr 9—1 hour and Yr10—2 hours. ) Study Skills programmes are being taught at the Year 10 and 11 levels at the moment. It is important that students balance their commitments over the coming weeks in order to do justice to their academic goals. In the Olympic arena our rower Mahe Drysdale was not putting his sickness up as an excuse for his performance. His goals were beyond any disruption and he declared he had given it his best shot. Preparation for exams is similar in that a strong focus and desire to achieve to your best is the mindset we must foster and encourage in our students. The staff are becoming familiar with an electronic attendance system which will be more efficient for the recording and monitoring of student attendance. It is therefore vital that you inform the school on the first morning of absence and that a note of explanation accompanies your daughter on her return. There is a large amount of money outstanding from school family accounts. This is from activities and resources that students have already received and puts great pressure on school financial operations. Your attention to meeting these debts would be much appreciated. Mrs Kerri van Tuel is doing a splendid job as Uniform Shop Operator. I hope you are finding her service and systems to your satisfaction. The shop hours are listed on page 7. Winter sports are drawing to a close and some teams are now competing in semi-final and final games. Special thanks to our staff, student and parent coaches and managers for their generosity throughout the season. The following reflection was shared with staff by Mrs Angie McKee recently. It captures beautifully the spirit of God at this time of the year.
Community: This daphne sprig gives you glory, Lord. Your artistry is perfect. I see two flowers open—the rest still buds, though the outer ones are beginning to unfurl. The buds are closely bound together on one stalk, in one calyx. How can there be room for them all to open to spread their four stiff waxy little petals Without getting in each other’s way, impinging on each other’s freedom? They are a community of your life in them and even though I don’t see how it can happen By tomorrow the flowering will be full to your glory! And the fragrance of that community will give great joy. Lord, teach me to trust you to develop your life in the people I am closest to, To trust that as a community we are not going to get in each other’s way As we spread our petals, to acknowledge that all love, all beauty, all fragrance Is a free gift from you. Thank you Lord! Regards and God’s blessings — Steve Bryan, Principal |

A Really Useful Website: www.faithcentral.net.nz is a Catholic website which features information about our RE programme. Students can use it to find information or references to other sites connected to their present topic. Parents may find it interesting to look at the topics we study at different levels. The Chapel heading on the site features some lovely prayers. |

Geography Trip to the Ruahine’s: One word: Unforgettable. On Wednesday, 6 August we set off with sceptical minds as to whether the trip was going to be enjoyable or not! We changed our minds very quickly. A mixture of ‘wicked’ views, determination and even some education!! gave us an experience of a lifetime. The highlight of our trip—SNOW! Tons of it. Thanks a bunch to Mrs Rutherford for making it happen. - Jessie Eagle (12CO) |

Debating News:The Year 12 team of Ashleigh Neave, Abigail Neave and Jessie Eagle lost by five points against Iona College. The Moot was “That Affluent Countries should accept More Refugees”.Our girls game them a run for their money. |

Term 3 has started with the continuation of winter sport which will finish before NZ Secondary tournament week—1 - 5 September. The College Netball team will be competing in the Lower North Island Secondary Schools Netball Tournament that week in Palmerston North. This Saturday is the final day of Netball. Four teams are competing in finals. Good luck to all teams.
Badminton finals are being held this week. We have two teams competing for top place in their grades. Our Rugby team has made the B final this week and our Football 1st X1 team is coming second in their competition.
On 19 August a team of Year 9 students competed in the HB College Day Netball tournament which was held in Hastings. The team played very well in the A division and came third.
Summer sports including Touch, Junior Volleyball, Cricket and Tennis begin in Term 4 and trials for these will commence after tournament week. We would appreciate parental involvement in managing and/or transport assistance. Sports photographs will be taken on Friday 29 August. Please ensure your daughter brings her sports uniform to school on this day. Thank you to all parents and supporters for the encouragement at games over the long winter season.
Te Toa Hockey Tournament: On 27 July our hockey team travelled to the annual Mission Schools’ tournament. We had a great time being placed third. We thank Mrs French, Mrs Johansen and Mrs Waapu for their support in making our trip possible. - Catherine Pihema (10WG)
Wanganui XChange: After a wonderful powhiri welcome our girls began their tournament at Cullinane College on 6 August. The hockey girls drew their game, the junior basketball won and the senior and junior netball teams and badminton team unfortunately lost their games. We had a wee hiccup on our return trip in that our bus broke down before we left Wanganui and we didn’t arrive home until 8.30pm. Even though we didn’t come home winners on the day, there was great fair play and participation from everyone. We thank our coaches and support people who accompanied us. — Christina Ferrick (12BN)
Congratulations to: Crystal Soper who has been chosen for the Hawke’s Bay Gymnastics Team Level 4 and Ashleigh Neave who was recently placed second overall representing New Zealand Under 17 Cycling team in the Canberra Tour.
Our 1st XV won the B grade final of the H.B. Secondary Schools’ Rugby Comp. defeating CHB College 39-20—Well done girls!

Fiddy Industries at Work: Our Young Enterprise Sales Director Amelia Longley, Managing Director Kate Simkin and Production Manager Veronica Noetzli on a sales drive in the staffroom, making the most of the publicity provided by a front page photo and article in the Napier Mail. "Fiddy" scarves have proved popular with both students and staff, although we have yet to see Mr Brown or Mr Scott wear their purchases! |

Farewell to Amy Clark (GAP): Amy has been with us since February 2008. During her time she has experienced much of our country, has accompanied students on many school trips and helped in all areas of our school. She has been a wonderful asset. She returns to her home on The Isle of Man and will complete a Geography Degree at the University of Liverpool. We wish her every happiness and success—God bless you Amy. |

Library Corner! Need something to beat the blues? How about a good book? When it comes to relaxing or just taking your mind off all that is going on around you nothing beats a book. To quote Groucho Marx, “Outside a dog, a book is a man’s best friend. Inside a dog it is too dark too read.” With a book you don’t have to feed it, walk it, or take it to the vet. But a book will always be a great companion, taking you on adventures near and far. Our PTA is once again funding the Read 2 Succeed Programme for our Year 9 students. This was so successful with wonderful endorsements from the Year 10 students who received a book last year. Scholastic Books are once again providing the books for the girls to choose from. Currently the girls are making their choices and we hope to present them with their book at the end of the term. This is a book they can keep and treasure and it is amazing how special the girls feel to own theirs. Our thanks go to the PTA for this wonderful gift. - Maryanne Macintosh-Wright, Library Manager |
