Christmas Newsletter |

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau, We are in the Church’s season of Advent when we prepare for Jesus’ coming; it is a time for us to open our hearts to the love God has for all of us. A time too for thanksgiving for the riches we have shared at school this year. It has been a great year at Sacred Heart and our Thanksgiving Mass on Wednesday evening will be a special occasion. Reports for all Year 9 and 10 students are with this newsletter. The levels of achievement and development indicated by grades and comments are tremendous. I congratulate all girls on their attitude and engagement with their learning. Since exams finished Year 10 girls have experienced a week of outdoor adventure activities. Reports from rivers, mountains and gorges have been of challenges met that have generated new levels of confidence in the outdoors. We now have a flag pole, funded by the PTA, erected on the courts. A ceremony was held for the initial raising of our New Zealand flag which can be sighted from most areas of the school. The school is fully staffed for next year. We welcome; Mrs Joanne Jowet-Morel (English), Miss Helen Wilson (Mathematics), Mrs Sue John (English and Religious Education) and Miss Shelley Bicknell (Art). We farewell Mrs Cynthia Perry our Library Manager of 15 years. Cynthia has provided a library service which has enabled girls and staff to develop their knowledge and love of books. Mrs Maryanne Macintosh-Wright will take over this role. Mrs Jean Collins, acting HOD of Technology leaves as Mrs Angela McKee returns from her study leave. Jean has been a real asset and we thank her for her contribution. We also thank Mr Josh Parker-Bevin and Mrs Doreen Keogh for their long term relieving positions and the work they have done. Start up dates for 2008 are attached. These should be carefully noted as should uniform shop hours for the order and purchase of uniform items. I look forward to sharing your company at our various celebrations in this final week of school and wish you and your family a very happy and safe holiday.
May the peace of Christ’s coming be with you all—Regards
— Steve Bryan, Principal |

Board of Trustees: It has been an extremely exciting and challenging year for the Board of Trustees. We have welcomed three new members and obviously seen three experienced members move on. We thank them for their contribution to the school. We have also seen a recent change in the student representative on the board. This is an important role and we thank Nicolette Epps for her contribution and look forward to working with Katie Alexander . She has already settled in well. During the last year there have been a number of events organized by the PTA that have been very successful as fundraisers for the school and also very enjoyable. If you are not already involved with the PTA now might be a good time to consider becoming a part of this fantastic group. They are a very good crowd and we thank them for their efforts in helping this fantastic school. - Chris Whittington, Board of Trustees |

Bridge to Nowhere Year 10 Camp 2007: On 27 November a group of excited Year 10 girls hopped in a little van with all their camping necessities which they thought would be needed for the four days at camp. Our brave teacher who attended this camp with us was Whaea Stewart. We arrived, not knowing exact details about the camp apart from …”We would be on the river in canoes”, “it may be cold”, ”we should have fun”. On arrival we discovered that we would be … “Staying in lodges or tents if we chose to”, “canoeing about 37km on day two”, “canoeing about 26km and walking for about half an hour or so on day three”, “canoeing about 24km on day four before driving home.” Our camp was a fun filled, hard going camp. As students, we formed new relationships and discovered more about each other as well as about Whaea Stuart. Our guide for our journey was Kelly Stevens. He was a funny but interesting character. Not only did he guide us down the river and teach us about some of the environment we were in, he also cooked and helped us with any difficulties we were having. Over all our camp was very enjoyable but very difficult. Personally, I would do it all over again. I hope everyone that gets the chance to make this journey down the Whanganui River will take up the opportunity. It is one which is unforgettable. - Emily Hands, 10KS
Day Camp: It was on a Wednesday morning when we thought we would be in for three days of relaxation—no school work to worry about! Horray! But later on in the day everything soon changed. A sea of buildings turned into a sea of trees and the roads turned into gravel—we were out in the wild outdoors! Soon we realised this was NOT three days of relaxation, we were in for three days of kayaking, cliff traversing and abseiling, gorging and jumping off waterfalls. The three day camp I went on was an unforgettable experience. I have seen a part of New Zealand I haven’t seen before—the scenery was just breath- taking. Through this experience, I have gained so much trust with my peers and made new friends. It has also boosted my confidence and if I were to be given the opportunity to do it again, I would definitely go for it. This camp wouldn’t have been as much fun without the help, guidance and comfort from Mr Marshall, Mr Iaveta and Mr Scott. Thank you all. - Judy Faka’osi, 10WU |
