Sister Colleen, Director of Religious Studies (DRS)

1991—2008

We honour and pay tribute to Sister Colleen who will retire from her role as DRS this year.  In the final week of term there will be occasions to celebrate the contribution she has made to our school.  We look forward especially to our Mass of Thanksgiving on Thursday 11 December at 7.30pm in St John’s Cathedral where we will acknowledge her wonderful contribution to the Special Character of our school.

Text Box: Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau,

Since the Year 11, 12 and 13 students  finished normal classes for their NCEA examinations Year 9 and 10 students have assumed leadership roles at school.  Congratulations to these girls who have represented and led us so admirably on Induction Day (2009 Year 9’s), on civic occasions (White Ribbon Day) and at assemblies.  Their mature and very responsible attitude is a great compliment to themselves and their families.

All students have now completed formal examinations; Years 11-13 their NCEA and Years 9-10 their school exams.  Once again congratulations to all students for the very impressive commitment and attitude they brought to their exams.  Senior girls studying at school on non-exam days, coming to tutorials on Saturdays, and all year levels being well prepared and organised on exam day, is another reflection of students’ focus towards their academic goals.  With this newsletter is a full report for Year 9 and 10 students, while Year 11-13 students must now wait until mid January for their NCEA results.

Year 10 students have enjoyed the challenges of outdoor education opportunities this week.  Many thanks to Mrs Sue Wakeling (HoD PE/Sport) and Mrs Henny French (Sports Co-ordinator) for their organisation of this programme.

Mrs Annabelle Stout, part time PE teacher is leaving at the end of the year to travel overseas with her husband.  Annabelle has been a very generous teacher, committing herself to our co-curricular programme.  Mrs Andrea Bloxham, teacher aide, is also finishing.  Andrea has supported students with learning needs.  We wish Annabelle and Andrea much happiness beyond Sacred Heart.

Thank you to families for payment of their school accounts.  We understand the difficult financial times and appreciate your commitment to these costs.  Our Bursar, Mrs Karen McGrail, is available at school to meet with parents about automatic payments.

Dates for the start of 2009 are listed at the back of the newsletter.  Please ensure your daughter is organised for her course confirmation day and uniform requirements are attended to on the scheduled days.  We specially acknowledge the fantastic work Mrs Kerri van Tuel our Uniform Shop Operator has done.  She has transformed this service.  The start of a school year is always full on and 2009 will provide extra attractions from the Technology development starting to preparations for our school production “Back to the 80’s”.

           In the meantime I thank you for your tremendous support of all aspects of school life this year.  I wish all families a very peaceful and happy Christmas and finish with a reflection about this most precious of times ahead;

...The season of Advent prepares us to celebrate:  the birth of Christ, the wondrous grace of God among us.  God is no longer hidden from us.  We cannot claim that we do not know Him.  He has revealed Himself to us, face-to-face, in the person of Jesus Christ.  This Advent, let us strive to open ourselves anew and welcome him into every corner of our lives.

Regards and God’s blessings  — Steve Bryan, Principal

Special Character Committee Fundraising: This committee has been busy running some fund raising activities during the year to support the various missions and causes that have requested our help.  Students have been really generous and we have had a lot of fun while raising the money.  We raised nearly $1600 on our last HOT, COLD, FUN FOOD DAY in October.

The students’ committee decided to donate funds to:

the Mission Sisters’ Projects in Myanmar to help educate street children and in the UK to help support women and girls who have been rescued from slave trafficking; the Christian Blind Mission and the Fred Hollows Foundation; Child Fund, for a ‘Goat for a Family’, chickens and school stationery; Cranford Hospice and CanTeen.

Congratulations to our Junior Leaders who took over the important role of leadership in the absence of our senior students.

Stop Child Labour:  9RD under  guidance from Miss Rutherford put themselves in the position of being child labourers.  They investigated world issues through the internet, played games associated with child labour, sold armbands to raise funds for Unicef and promoted their cause through the media and school.  9RD found this a life changing experience.

Our Itinerant Music Programme offers tuition in several different instruments including voice.  Enrolments are due by Friday 5 December. However, students wishing to join the programme may apply after this date and be put on a waiting list for 2009.  The lessons offer both value and opportunity and are well worth considering.  Information and enrolments forms may be collected from the College office or the Music Department.

Text Box: Sport

2008 has been a successful year for sport with an increase in the number of teams competing in the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ competitions.  We have seen extra football, volleyball, tennis and netball teams and the re-introduction of a squash, softball and touch team.

Volleyball at junior and senior levels is very strong with both Senior A and Junior A teams in the top three in Hawke’s Bay at secondary school level.  Also our Junior B and C teams are developing well.  Special thanks to Patricia Maka who has coached our Junior A team very competently.

From 3-5 December forty five Year 10 students were involved in Outdoor Education.  Options available to them were:

v Mohaka Valley—This was a three day/two night camp based at Mountain View in the Mohaka Valley.  Students slept under canvas and cooked their own meals.  They experienced tubing on the river, rock climbing and tramping.

v Gorging—Jumping off waterfalls, sliding down rock slides and swimming through plunge pools.  This was a great activity for developing awareness of what can be achieved and having a load of fun in the process.

v Waitere Cliff Traverse—this activity involved climbing and traversing a section of cliff face using a range of safety techniques until the top of a 60m abseil  was reached.  A great challenge that extended students

v Sit-on-top Kayaking and Canoeing down the Mohaka River—A good fun Grade 2 section of river that allowed students to learn how to paddle a kayak correctly, develop some skills and have fun with challenges along the way.

This outdoor component of school life is a compulsory and valuable part of the Year 9,10 and 13 Health and Physical Education curriculum.  It contributes to personal growth and development, team building and cements form class bonding and friendships.  It also allows the opportunity to share experiences of fun and challenges outside the classroom.

           - Mrs French, Sports Co-ordinator

Congratulations to Ashleigh Neave for her nomination for Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ Sportsperson of the Year Award.  She received a Merit Award for Cycling.

Push Play week consisted of a variety of fun physical activities.  Our girls played a very good game of Volleyball against a very professional staff team—Mr Iaveta showed off his outstanding serves and Mr Scott’s sportsmanship was outstanding.  Students enjoyed other activities like tennis, kin ball and rockclimbing.  The week finished with the whole school on the green getting their hearts pumping with Aerobics.  Some great spot prizes were given to students for active participation, House spirit and appropriate physical activity wear.  Thanks go to the P.E. Department for organising these events and to all the students who took the opportunity to ‘Push Play’ at school.      Miss Arrowsmith—PE

Library Corner!

Reflecting over the past year I am thrilled by the level of activity that has been happening in the Library. We have a number of girls who have achieved Reading Record awards this term. Sarah Cotter has achieved Gold; Shelah Abdullah has achieved Silver; Holly Weston has achieved Bronze and attaining the Pewter Award are Holly Weston, Esther Harrington, Katherine Muma and Anna Price.

While the Marian Library is closed now for issues and the holidays are fast approaching I encourage you to take your girls to the public libraries and keep them reading. There’s nothing better than to “chill out” with a good book.
