Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau— Welcome to the school year. It is great to be back into the positive life of the College. Our school roll is very healthy and we have started the year with 369 students. We have shared two Special Character occasions; our opening school assembly and inaugural Mass. Both events celebrated the riches God has blessed us with, our new pupils and staff, and our Year 13 leaders. Our senior academic results from 2006 are very good. Congratulations to all girls who achieved to their potential and special acknowledgement of Jennifer McElroy (English and Biology) and Laura Jeffares (English) for achieving Scholarship awards. We have received both the confirmed Education Review Office Report and the Catholic Education Office’s Special Character Report. We are very pleased with both documents which highlight many areas of good performance. They are both available to you either from the school office or on our school website. As part of our school goals for this year (see below) for students to achieve to their potential we are guiding them through a Personal Plan which helps them set goals and review these each term. Please discuss these with your daughter when she brings her Personal Plan home. Her Form Teacher will also highlight it when they make phone contact with you shortly. In order to gain maximum benefit from every school day it is important that absences are kept to a minimum. Of course keep your daughter at home if she is unwell but we expect full attendance otherwise. Please communicate with me if you are planning an absence. The health and safety of our girls is paramount at all times. If driving your daughters to school, please assist us by dropping and collecting them from Coote Road; it is safer for them to walk up and down the ramp to school. There are many events on our school calendar. Our school community is so rich because of the support you provide for your daughters. I look forward to meeting you on these occasions. Best wishes and God’s blessings — Steve Bryan, Principal

Board Talk … Kia Orana, Warm Pacific greetings and welcome to all students, staff, whanau and supporters of Sacred Heart College. With the 2007 Board of Trustee’s election early this year we encourage you to "make a difference for our school" and become a school trustee. Trustees are active leaders in our schools and we need more people willing to use their skills and experiences for the benefit of students. Trustees have an important role supporting strong professional leadership and effective teaching for all students through informed governance. We have five vacancies. Nominations close at noon on 15 March. Your nomination could be accompanied by a statement about yourself. The roll will be open for inspection during school hours. Our Returning Officer is Mrs Carol Murphy—contactable at the school. Watch for School Trustee Election information. If you are a Telecom residential customer you can help our school redeem points for the latest technology products and services. It won't cost you a cent and it can really benefit our students. All you have to do is phone 123, have your latest telecom account handy and nominate Sacred Heart College, Napier for the “School Connection Programme”. It costs you nothing, but makes a difference to our students. Tina Luka |

Swimming Sports The day started with a hiss and a roar—the colourful brigade of red, yellow, green and blue lined the seating of the Onekawa Pools. The optimism of the houses could be seen and heard from the chanting and singing which encouraged our swimmers to compete to their very best. There were also some very interesting costumes. The novelty events were tough but fun competition for the girls and the staff blitzed Year 13 in the relay race. A great day was had by all and everyone earned a good night’s sleep.—Stephanie Brenchley 13WS House Results: 1st : Barbier 445 points 2nd : Marian 382 points 3rd : Aubert 235 points 4th : Holderness 225 points Congratulations to: Marjory Kirby selected for the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ Cricket Squad. Tabloid Sports: The greens and courts were a carnival of bright colours with the Year 12 PE class having set out a wide range of fabulous activities for the school: the classic ‘egg and spoon’ race, ‘three-legged’ race, ‘wheelbarrow’ race, wicket bowling, hacky-sack-in-the-bucket and many more. A great day was had by all. We were threatened by a few spits of rain but this didn’t dampen our spirits. The teachers and girls all thoroughly entered into the true Tabloid Sports school spirit—it was awesome! - Stephanie Brenchley (13WS)
Congratulations to: Marjory Kirby who has been chosen for the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ Cricket Squad. |
