February 2008 |
|
Inaugural Mass “Love one another with true respect and service” was the theme for our very special Inaugural Mass. It was lovely to see past pupils and past teachers, family, friends of the school and Sisters of our Lady of the Missions, celebrating the beginning of our new school year together. At the Mass, Yr 13 Leaders for 2008 were commissioned. We prayed for God’s guidance in all our decisions and prayed for a successful year. We thank Fr Paul Kerridge, Monsignor Hannigan, Fr Felix and Deacon Vince Onesi for celebrating the Mass. Thanks also to Mrs McKee and Miss Hoera for all their hard work and organisation and everyone else who contributed to make the Mass a memorable occasion. |

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau, Greetings and welcome to the 2008 school year. I trust the holiday period was relaxing for you and that special family times were enjoyed. The school year is now well under way; we are fully staffed, student leaders have been inaugurated, all girls have classroom programmes and are setting goals for the year. Your involvement in the support for these goals is crucial to your daughter’s success this year. Our inaugural Mass on Friday last week was a beautiful witness to our Special Catholic Character. The theme of ‘Love one another with true respect and service’ will be highlighted throughout the year. Our Year 13 Leaders were announced and blessed by Father Paul and it was especially exciting to see our new Year 9 girls make such a strong commitment to the singing and participation in the Mass. Our N.C.E.A. results for 2007 are very pleasing. We have achieved above national percentages in all levels and many individuals have been awarded endorsements. These are listed under Academic Excellence on the next page. More details of N.C.E.A. analysis will be presented in our next newsletter. It is pleasing to see all students now in full school uniform after some problems with our suppliers in Auckland; this was extremely frustrating and I apologise for this inconvenience. I ask you to ensure your daughter’s presentation is always of the highest standard which includes compliance with school rules regarding earrings, makeup etc. Our focus for this year is: |
|
These will be developed further in subsequent newsletters and your contributions, particularly to formulating a new Strategic Plan and in exploring the new New Zealand Curriculum, will be welcomed. Sr Colleen, our Director of Religious Studies has just returned from Thailand where she attended a Mission Sisters’ Chapter. The prayer on page 3 comes from the Sisters and is very appropriate as we embark into a new year. I look forward to meeting you at one of the many events on our school calendar in the coming months.
Regards and God’s blessings — Steve Bryan, Principal |

This programme runs for three terms of the school year and we meet with Year 9 students during scheduled form time. Here are some photos for you to giggle over taken at our recent Year 9 orentiation.
We congratulate our new School Leaders for 2008:

Term 1 has started off with a busy time in the Sports Department. The College has two Senior Tennis teams and five Junior Tennis teams. All teams have Managers - Special thanks to Mr Brown, Miss Lewis and Mr Scott. Games are played at different schools on a Tuesday after school. We have three Volleyball teams. They play at the Pettigrew-Green Arena on a Wednesday evening. This is the most number of teams we have had. Coaches are Mrs Stout, Miss Calder and student Coach, Patricia Maka. Thursday after school is Touch Rugby and Cricket. Touch is played at Central Hawke’s Bay College. We have only one team as a result of transport difficulties. Mrs Wakeling is managing the team. Cricket has been fortunate to obtain a qualified Coach. Ryan Pryor has offered to coach in Term 1 before he takes up a playing role in Britain in April. Thank you Ryan and also Mr Marshall who is the teacher in charge of Cricket. On 26 February a group of students will compete in the Year 9 and 10 Athletic Relays in Hastings. We have three teams entered in the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ Teams Triathlon to be held on 12 March. Thanks to Miss Calder and our student coaches Abigail Neave and Catherine Bilby.
The College wishes to thank all Sports Managers and Coaches for the time and effort put in towards promoting sport in our College. Without these people Sport would not run to such a high participation level. Throughout the year we are always looking for parental support in this area. We are fortunate to have our top teams of Netball, Hockey and Soccer being coached by highly qualified people - Cecilia Rappel (Netball), Deborah and Te Paea Parkinson (Hockey) and Tim Motu (Soccer). We require 8 coaches for our Netball teams, a Rugby coach, Managers for Canoe Polo, Squash and Badminton. If you are able to assist please contact Mrs French, Sports Co-ordinator.
