This is an acknowledgement of our Super 12 Kapa Haka group who performed in the inaugural Super 12 competition. We were successful in winning the competition.  It was a big occasion as it was the first time we have joined together with our brother school, St John's in competition in Kapa Haka.  Our hard work was rewarded by our winning     the competition and receiving a beautiful trophy.
Sincere thanks must go to our tutor Paora Te Rangi and his family.  Without their dedication and support this would not have been possible.  Then to our parents who allowed their children to participate, many thanks for your support.
You will be able to see this group perform at the Arts Festival.  Please come along and support this event.  Tickets can be bought at the door -
(see the enclosed flyer).

OPEN AFTERNOON
August 15  1 - 3 pm

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
As we begin the second part of the year it is pleasing to see students working hard to achieve the goals they have set.  I urge senior students to begin a study programme in preparation for Assessment Week later this term as this is an important build-up for external examinations.  To achieve the best possible results students must be focussed, make the most of every class and revise methodically.  It is vital that those with co-curricular commitments plan ahead to meet assessment obligations.
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs Wendy Clark as our school Chaplain.  This is a position shared with St John's College and marks a new level of co-operation between the two colleges.
It has been a privilege to have Mrs Briony Bradley with us for a year on a teacher exchange.  Sadly she and her family leave on 16 August to return to Horsham, England.  We have really appreciated the valuable contribution she has made to Sacred Heart College.  On 13 August, we also farewell our GAP student, Alex Joseph, who has been with us since January, efficiently carrying out duties in both the hostel and school.  We wish Alex well as she returns to Birmingham and then to begin architectural studies at Edinburgh University.  We welcome Lurline Malasia who has joined us as a Teacher Aide primarily to work with Pasifika students.
We are holding our annual Open Afternoon on Sunday, 15 August from 1--3pm.  Please encourage families you know with Year 7 and 8 daughters to come along and find out about the educational opportunities available at Sacred Heart College.

God bless
Monica Johnson, Principal

At our first assembly for the term, we used our new lectern cover which was made by Mrs Margaret Matthews.  At each assembly, we will bring up the cover for the beginning of Prayers and when our prayer time is over we will take it off and put it away.
There are three symbols on the cover:

  • The heart which represents our own hearts and Sacred Heart College.
  • The dove which represents God's gift of peace and also our Baptism.
  • The flames which represent the Holy Spirit inspiring us with wisdom, understanding and courage.
Over the side of the cover we will hang a narrow sash of a different colour to represent the church season we are in, e.g. green for Ordinary Time, Purple for Lent.

Introducing Wendy Clark, our new Chaplain …

Wendy moves north to begin at St John's College and Sacred Heart College on 9 August.
Wendy is a trained secondary teacher and counsellor with a passion for History and RE.  She and her husband spent several years teaching in Singapore and enjoyed living in its vibrant and colourful multi-cultural environment.  Since returning home, Wendy became involved in church work, teaching, helping new immigrants and refugees settle in our country and working for the underprivileged.
Wendy has always been energetic and into most sports at school, especially netball and athletics.  She celebrated turning 40 by becoming an aerobics instructor and in 2002 competed in the NZ Masters Games as part of a STEP team.  A great thrill as they won gold!
Arch, Wendy's husband, is a trained teacher, counsellor and social worker currently teaching international students and refugees in Christchurch.  He's mad about motor bikes which he's ridden since he was 15.
Wendy's Mum lives in Napier so she is looking forward to seeing more of her.  Her Mum has a great love of life, something that Wendy shares with her.

Farewell and thanks … Briony Bradley:  Briony is from England and  has been living here in Napier for the last twelve months.  She and her husband, Nick, and their two children exchanged teaching positions with Michael Perry and she has been teaching Y11, 12, 13 Geography, Y9 Social Studies, Y12 Recreation and has also had a Y11 form class.  We wish her and her family every blessing on their return to their homeland  We will miss your lovely presence in our school.  Also farewell and thanks to Alex Joseph who has been at our school for the last seven months as a GAP student.  Alex is a lovely English Rose who has been so helpful and willing and a joy to have around.

Welcome to … Maureen Quiche who is in Y12 and has come to our College from Belgium as an AFS Exchange student.  She is settling in very well and beginning to feel quite a home.

Olympic Day Run

On Friday 25 June, the whole school walked to the Botanical Gardens.  We then formed the shape of the Olympic Rings for a photo.  After that we  ate our lunch there as a school. Each student year group were dressed in the following colours:
Year 9--Blue   Year 10--Yellow
Year 11--Red   Year 12--Green
Year 13--Black
Mrs Johnson read out the following Olympic message …
These five intertwined rings were designed in 1913 by the founder of the Modern Olympics--Baron Pierre de Coubertin.  He said, "They represent the five parts of the world now won over to the Olympism.  Also the five colours thus combined represent those of all nations, with no exception.  This is a real international emblem".
The Olympic flame symbolizes the endeavour for perfection and the struggle for victory.
At the games of the 4th Olympiad in 1908 de Coubertin heard the sermon of the Bishop of Pennsylvania in a service marking the Games. The sermon inspired the idea for Baron de Coubertin's Olympic message, the words of which have been displayed on the scoreboard at every modern Olympic Games since.
"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part.  Just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle".
One of the aims of the Olympic movement is to educate young people through sport in a spirit of better understanding between each other and of friendship, thereby helping to build a better and more peaceful world.
Thank you for getting into the spirit of this day.  Let us all help spread these worthy Olympic messages throughout the world.
This was a fun-filled event as a tribute to the 2004 Olympic Games to be held in Athens this year--2004.

Academic Challenge 2004

On 30 June, the inter-school Academic Challenge against St John's College was held in the Hostel dining room.  It was an enjoyable night, packed with enthusiasm and extremely high competition.
Despite our two teams' best efforts, St John's managed to take overall first place for the second year.
We would like to thank all those who helped in the preparation of the night and the Hostel for the use of their facilities.
Thank you.

Work Experience Day

From holey gumboots, wet woolley socks and smelly fish hands to sterling silver jewellery.  I had an absolute educational blast at our Year 10 Work Experience as I chose to go to Marineland and Baldwins Jewellers.
At Marineland, I hand-fed many of the sea creatures including fur sealions, dolphins and otters, whilst learning about their natural habits and habitats.  Balwins Jewellers was a more observing task as it required a lot of time, patience versus perserverence and creativity which I found is needed to be a great jeweller.  Later on  in the day I was given the opportunity to handmake my own solid sterling silver ring.  I was fortunate to experience two totally opposite types of career opportunities which I was interested in and enjoyed every single moment--southerly winds and all!!.

Te Toa Hockey

On 24,25 and 26 July the first XI Hockey team took part in the Te Toa Hockey tournament.  Te Toa is a Mission schools competition and this year was hosted by St Joseph's Maori Girls' College.  Other competing schools were Sacred Heart New Plymouth, Sacred Heart Lower Hutt and Sacred Heart Hamilton.
The games were played with a really friendly, sporting spirit but, of course, were very competitive.
The New Plymouth team was very strong and won the trophy. Our girls played some excellent games, demonstrating strong defensive skills.  In particular, our Goalie, Cindy Wallace, was outstanding.
The improvement shown in this team from last year is remarkable. This was evident from the much smaller goal differences in this tournament.

Catholic Schools Board Limited--Attendance Dues

Thank you to all those parents/caregivers who pay their Attendance Dues on time.  Your payments enable the Catholic Schools Board Limited to continue to finance loans, pay insurance costs on our school buildings and to refurbish and build new ones.  Prompt payment of Attendance Dues can help us achieve our aim to provide the best possible facilities for our students.
To those parents/caregivers who are receiving overdue notices and letters from our office and are not responding we remind you that the payment of Attendance Dues is a legal requirement under Section 36 of the Private Schools Integration Act 1975.  It is vital that you contact our office immediately by telephoning (04) 499.0184.
All payments of Attendance Dues accounts are to be made direct to the Catholic School Board Limited, PO Box 12-341, Thorndon, Wellington and should not be paid to a school apart from exceptional circumstances where special arrangements have been made.  Last October we introduced Credit Card and Eftpos as available options while, Automatic Payment, Phone Banking and payments through the Internet have been available for some time.

Teacher Only Day

On Monday, 19 July all our staff and support staff attended a Teacher  Only Day at the Te Aranga Marae in Flaxmere.  We were Powhiried onto the Marae by children from the Kimi Ora Community School.
We were very fortunate to have Rangi Davis as our spiritual leader for the day.  Rangi is employed by the Mercy Sisters in Auckland and she spoke about Maori Spirituality.  Everyone agreed that this was a very worthwhile experience.

Student Work Day

The response so far to this fundraiser has been very disappointing with only 27% of our students having returned their work day money.  This money is for the benefit of our girls and is not put into the day-to-day running of our school.

Please, parents, can you check that your daughters have returned their workday money to the office.

Exchange Student

We are desperate for a caring Catholic family to provide a homestay for a German Exchange Student from the Black Forest Region who loves animals and outdoor life.
We require a home for her for Term 4 of this year and Term 1 and 2 of 2005.  The normal homestay fee will be paid.
If you are able to help, please contact Carol Murphy at school or on her home phone number--835.0762.

The Catholic Secondary School for Hawke's Bay girls

9 August … School will be closing at 2.20 on 9 August for staff to continue with important professional development with our literacy adviser, Ken Kilpin on improving teaching and learning.  Buses will run early where possible.

This will be classed as a school afternoon as we want to show the school in operation.  The students' assistance in this important promotion is a key to its success.

Reminder…
Fees for National Qualifications (NCEA) will soon be payable.
The majority of all Year 11, 12 and 13 students will be charged $150, unless you qualify for financial assistance (I.e. have more than one child undertaking these qualifications in 2004, receive a benefit, or have a joint family income below the threshold for a Community Services Card).
The final date for financial assistance applications is 31 August 2004.  Please ask for an application form as soon as possible, as this may reduce fees payable to as little as $20.
You will receive an account early in Term 3 and the school must receive full payment before 27 August to avoid penalties.
