Senior Ball “My Secret Garden” was the theme for the Sacred Heart / St John’s Colleges Senior Ball, at the War Memorial Centre in Napier last Saturday night. Our girls looked beautiful and had a wonderful night. Here are some photos for you to enjoy. |

Our Annual Academic Challenge against St John’s College was held last week. Our Junior and Senior teams put up a fantastic fight to the end. St John’s retained the Cup by only a few points. Well done everyone on a wonderful evening of active brain-power. Also, thank you to Mrs Taylor for her tireless hours compiling the questions and organising the event —phew!!! |

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau, In recent times we have celebrated the range of our Special Character dimensions. Sacred Heart Feast Day was a tremendous witness of the love that Jesus declares for us all as we shared Mass at St Patrick’s Church and then hosted Fairhaven children and entertained one another in our afternoon concert. A few days later many staff and student representatives attended the funeral Mass for Mrs Doreen Keogh, past pupil, teacher, Chaplain, Trust Board member and driving force behind the Chapel fundraising appeal. Doreen’s life highlighted the values associated with family and service to others that are so central to our Special Character. Included in this mailout is your daughter’s first full report for the year. I have been very impressed as I read through them with the excellent attitude of students towards their learning. Our focus in Term 3 will be strongly academic to ensure goals are realised. Parent interviews next week provide the opportunity to discuss progress towards these goals. Parent Teacher Interviews Tuesday—1 July at Sacred Heart: 4-7pm Thursday—3 July at St John’s College: 5-7pm
The end of the term marks Miss Raewyn Calder’s departure. Raewyn has served the first two plus years of her teaching career at Sacred Heart and now is setting off for her big OE. She has been a very generous, popular and successful PE teacher, coach and organiser of sport. Mrs Jill Massey our Executive Officer/Bursar also leaves to move to the South Island. Jill for 8 years has given us excellent service and advantaged the College in many financial, property and personnel areas. We wish Raewyn and Jill all the best in their new adventures. Their replacements respectively are Miss Susan Arrowsmith (ex Tamatea High School) and Mrs Karen McGrail. The first day of Term 3 Monday 21 July will double as a staff professional development day (New Zealand Curriculum Planning) and student work day. (Notices enclosed in this mail out.) Please support both of these important initiatives by completing the B.o.T.’s consultation soon to be sent to you, and by encouraging your daughter’s work commitment on the day. World Youth Day commences in Sydney soon. We have 20 girls travelling to Sydney and we wish them God’s blessings for a fulfilling and safe pilgrimage.
‘God of all that has been, we remember those who have gone before us; We pray that their example will inspire and guide our journey towards World Youth Day 2008’ Amen
Regards and God’s blessings — Steve Bryan, Principal |

Congratulations to: Katie Alexander, Morgan Dysart and Lauren Johnson —as part of the Catholic Youth Band “U Turn”, they were runners-up in the Te Taiwhenua O Heretaunga Award for outstanding achievement in Culture, Art and Music fields at the recent Hawke’s Bay Youth Awards. The band received $100 for their efforts—well done girls.
Young Vinnies: Our Vinnies girls and Mrs Lunnon held a cake sale last week and raised $38.60. This money will go to “Family Life International”. A great team effort—well done.
Sacred Heart Feast Day: What a wonderful day we had to celebrate our special day. We celebrated Mass at St Patrick’s Church in the morning. Sr Carmel was recognised there for her wonderful work keeping our Archives up to date. Our special friends from Fairhaven joined us for games, shared lunch and in the afternoon we all went down to the Gymnasium for our concert—what fun!!
Touch of Class: Once again we welcomed Year 8 students to share a day in the life of a High School student.

PARENTS ... Your hard earned dollars spent on your daughter’s uniform could be sitting in lost property in the Home Economics Department. Please ensure that all uniform is very clearly named. This also means items that are brought to school for camp or sports events. The old saying “Inspect not Expect” is useful here, as you need to check yourself that the items are marked. Save your Dollars and train the young ones to take care of their belongings. The charity shop does well out of our unclaimed unmarked items!! |

Mission Cup: Term 2 has been a very busy term for winter sport. Our College Netball team competed in the Mission Cup over Queen’s Birthday weekend at Sacred Heart College, Hamilton. Our team did fantastically well achieving third place. Congratulations to all concerned. Our next trip away will be to Palmerston North at the end of August to compete at the Lower North Island Secondary Schools’ Netball tournament.
The Napier netball teams are having mixed success. The Development team won the Collegiate B grade in round one and have been promoted to Collegiate A. This is an outstanding achievement. The College Senior A netball team has won all their games and has been promoted into Collegiate B grade. Congratulations to all players. The College thanks our parent netball coaches: Cecilia Su’a-Rappel, Tina Luka, Vicki Simpson, Jenny Dinneen and Shiralee Kora, our senior student coaches and umpires.
Our rugby team is undefeated in second division. Special thanks to coach Reti Takiwa and Mr Marshall. We have three football teams this year. The 1st X1 team is undefeated and playing extremely well. Special thanks to Tim Motu for all the great coaching and Mr D Brown, Mr Scott and Mrs Stout for managing teams.
This year we have a junior squash team and will be competing in the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ Squash Championships. Thank you to Mrs Lisa Whittaker for her leadership.
Practices for our hockey team are not for the faint hearted; 6.30am until 7.30am in the morning! We will be competing in the Mission Schools’ Te Toa Hockey tournament in July in Lower Hutt. Thank you to coaches Deborah and Te Paea.
The College has six badminton teams competing in the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ competition and four canoe polo teams in the local competition. Thanks to Mrs Pearce and parents who organise and coach the teams.
Our junior basketball team has lost only one game against Havelock North High School so is sitting 2nd in the A grade Hawke’s Bay competition and our senior team is undefeated. Thanks to Mrs Taylor for her tireless energy.
I attended a Sports Coordinator conference last week with coordinators from the lower North Island. From feedback we are one of the very few secondary schools to have such a commitment from teachers in sport. Our participation rate of 65% is very high as nearly all schools were strategically planning for 2012 to get to 60% participation. I am proud to say that sport in our school is expanding and the quality of coaching is great. - Henny French, Sports Co-ordinator |

June has been an exceptionally busy month for ‘things musical.’ A variety of events had our girls featuring in barbershop singing, a rock band, choral singing and chamber music performances. Toni Makea and her group “Intermars” qualified from their performance in the heats, to compete in the local final of the 2008 Smokefree Rockquest.
Mr Lundall is pictured conducting our Marian Choir while in rehearsal for this year’s “Big Sing” at the Municipal Theatre in Napier. Twenty three choirs from local secondary schools performed in the daytime competition and an evening gala performance on Wednesday 11 June.
Also pictured are two of our chamber groups who competed in the Hawke’s Bay District Chamber Music Contest for secondary schools held at the Century Theatre last weekend.
Congratulations to: Judy Faka’osi who was placed first in the Registered Music Teachers Institute annual Scholarship Competition recently and was awarded the Neville Harkness Memorial Cup. Also to Christina Noetzli for “very highly commended” at the same competition. She also performed in the Napier Performing Arts Society Easter Competitions this year receiving seven awards.
