Sacred Heart Feast Day Some of the images below of our Feast Day. This year we celebrated the 140th Anniversary of our College founded in 1867 by the Sisters of our Lady of the Missions. We had a great party—look out 2017 when we celebrate 150 years! |

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau— Our Sacred Heart Feast Day last Friday was a tremendous day. The Mass at St Patrick’s was celebrated by Father Simon Story and during Mass new Board Trustees were introduced and blessed, our Mission Sisters sang “Gloria Patri”, a traditional ceremonial hymn and Miss Anne Saddler our Assistant Principal, was acknowledged for her wonderful years of service to Sacred Heart College. Back at school children from Fairhaven School (Special Needs) were hosted by each form class and the concert in the afternoon unearthed some amazing talent! The spirit of love and fun that permeated the day made us all who work and play at Sacred Heart feel very privileged. Included in this posting is an information sheet from NZQA outlining the new NCEA developments. While the finer details are yet to be released it promises to reward students for working hard and will acknowledge their specific level of achievement. Full reports on your daughter’s first half year’s progress are also in this posting. The girls have received parent interview sheets and we look forward to sharing thoughts with you next week at the interviews—Sacred Heart: Tuesday, 26 June, St John’s: Thursday, 28 June. This term has been a great celebration of school life. Stage Challenge was a superb production of colour, movement and creative expression. Our team’s third placing was deserved recognition. The Ball with St John’s was a glittering occasion; our young ladies’ deportment and company throughout the night were a pleasurable experience. Our “Big Sing” choirs performed beautifully at the Municipal Theatre and received rapturous applause. Put these alongside the busy weekly sports’ schedule and it is clear our girls have numerous opportunities to express the talents and potential they each possess. To ensure your daughter’s safety I urge you to monitor and be aware of their internet and cellphone usage. Unhealthy or threatening images and messages are sadly all too accessible. Please be in tune with your daughter’s screen time. If you require help to deal with cyber bullying call 0508 NETSAFE. I had the pleasure recently of enrolling two students who have quite independently made a commitment to undertake a Baptismal programme. Congratulations also to the girls who received the Sacrament of Confirmation recently—these young people’s commitment to Faith is inspiring. At the end of the term we farewell Mrs Carol Murphy our Star/Gateway Administrator who is off on her big OE! We thank Carol for her wonderful work and wish her much happiness in her travels. We welcome Mrs Rosemary Menzies as her replacement and also Mrs Gay Haley, a part time Maths teacher. I hope the winter bugs can be avoided and that you can all enjoy the warmth and companionship of your family in these cooler times. A Feast Day Prayer we received: In the love of God May we be warmed and welcomed In the joy of Jesus May we be strengthened and made whole In the breath of the Spirit May we be challenged and blessed.
Regards and God’s blessings — Steve Bryan, Principal |

Geography Olympiad ... On Thursday 31 May a team of three Y11 Geography students travelled to Central Hawkes Bay High School to represent us at the regional Maatangi Whenua Geography Olympiad. They joined teams from most of the Hawkes Bay colleges in a competition that involved several rounds of activities designed to test their geographic knowledge and skills. The girls enjoyed the experience, represented the school very well and achieved a very creditable second place to the team from Havelock North High School. Congratulations to Emma Hinton, Catherine Joule and Clarrissa Morley-D’Ath. |

Senior Ball … “The Oscars” was the theme for the 2007 Sacred Heart College/St John’s College Ball held on 9 June. Everyone looked spectacular as they walked into the venue at the Hastings Racecourse. The band provided quality music, the catering was more than satisfactory and we are sure everyone is eager to see the photos. The night was a huge success and enjoyed by all. Many thanks to our girls who assisted in the organisation alongside St John’s College. |

Stage Challenge … This year continued our tradition of high quality performances and huge enjoyment for the girls involved. Our theme was based on our multi- culture and the result was a visually stunning and beautifully polished performance that everyone could understand. The audience enjoyed it and the judges’ comments were uniformly positive. We were presented with many awards and every one of them was well deserved. Thanks to our sponsors and everyone who helped with set and costume. Your help was deeply appreciated. David Brown—Co-ordinator |

Congratulations to … Rachel Doohan who has won the role of Victoria, the white kitten, in Napier Operatic Society’s forthcoming production of CATS. Rehearsals begin this month and we all look forward to enjoying Rachel’s performance. |

Mission Cup … Our team was welcomed at Sacred Heart College, New Plymouth with a Powhiri. We were allocated our rooms in the Hostel, given dinner and sent for a good night’s sleep before competition began the next day. Saturday dawned rather wet and even though we lost all three games, we felt that we had improved with every game and had used a number of combinations so that everyone got good game time. We had a wonderful evening of activities that night which enabled us to mix with teams from other schools—it was great fun! On Sunday, we played two games, one of which we lost but when we won against Cathedral College, it felt great. We would like to thank: our Coach, Mrs Rappel; Manager Janette Dick; and Mr Bryan for their support and guidance over the weekend. It was wonderful.
Our team was Atareta Puketapu (Captain), Bonnie Coutts, Jazz Kora, Alarna McKie, Nivana Manson, Veronica Noetzli, Vanessa Oliver, Eniketi Onesi, Rebecca Rappel, Hilary Sandford - Atareta Puketapu (Captain)
Congratulations to Nivana Manson, Eniketi Onesi and Teresa Dick who have been selected for the Napier Netball Under 15 Reps and Rebecca Rappel, Alarna McKie and Veronica Noetzli for the Napier Netball Under 17 Reps. |

The Big Sing” … On Thursday, 14 June our Marian and Pasifika Choirs participated in The Big Sing at the Napier Municipal Theatre. Our choirs performed with 21 other choirs from as far away as Gisborne and Central Hawke’s Bay. We are very proud of their performances and they received very positive comments from the adjudicator.
Chamber Music Competition … We wish our Chamber Music Groups all the very best as they compete over the weekend of 23, 24 June in the regional competition at the Century Theatre. |
