Introducing our new Deputy Principal

Miss Kirstin Daly

The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of our new Deputy Principal who will begin in Term 2, 2006.  Kirstin comes from a background in education and sport.  She taught at New Plymouth Girl’s High School for five years, was Head of Biology at Havelock North High School and Assistant Principal at Taradale High School.  She captained the New Zealand Women’s Basketball Team at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and was Assistant Coach at the Olympics in 2004.

Kirstin is a very energetic and motivated person who is looking forward to getting involved in the extra curricular activities at our College and is extremely excited about joining our Sacred Heart team.

We acknowledge the achievement of two of our students …

Jazz Kora (9GE) who has been chosen for the Under 15 New Zealand Basketball team and is preparing for a tournament in Australia in 2007.  Jazz plays for Hawke’s Bay Under 15.

Kate O’Malley who won two gold medals in the long course and short course canoe races at the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships in March.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As I write my last newsletter it is with a deep sense of gratitude and sorrow that I bid farewell to the Sacred Heart College Community.  Gratitude for the opportunity to serve as your Principal for the last 3½ years and for all that I have gained personally during that time.  Thank you for the privilege of serving you,  I feel great sadness at leaving this special school and beautiful Hawke’s Bay. What makes this school special is the Mission charism and the way it is embraced.  There are wonderful people associated with the school—students, staff, families and parishes.  You will always have a special place in my heart.

The first term has gone very well and it is good to see the students settling into work routines and making the most of the wide range of opportunities available.  We have had some wonderful events that have brought the students together and impressive teaching and learning throughout the school.

As a school during Lent, we have been focusing on the work of CARITAS.  This year focus is on ’we’ rather than ’me’ responding to disasters. I quote from Mother Teresa—”For faith to be true, it has to be generous and loving”.  We work in a spirit of hope and each week have focused on a theme.  The themes are: Encouragement, Friendship, Happiness, Patience, Prayer and Peacefulness.

The enclosed Interim Report is a quick indication of how your daughter has settled this year.  There is an opportunity to discuss progress and any concerns at the Parent Interviews in the last week of term—Wednesday, 12 April from 4.00—6.30pm in the gymnasium.

I thank each of you for your support of the College.  I know that I leave Sacred Heart College in good hands with Mr Steve Bryan as Principal and Ms Kirstin Daly as Deputy Principal.  The school is in good heart and ready for the next stage in its long and proud history.

May the peace of the risen Christ be with you all this Easter.

God bless — Monica Johnson, Principal

Field Trip … In February, Year 12 Art students travelled to Clifton and Te Mata Peak to gather drawings and photographs of our “konic landscape” for NCEA Level 2 artwork.  Weatherwise, the day was perfect.  Artwise, the trip has proved to have been inspirational with students currently completing wonderful work.

Year 13 Annual Retreat Day… On March 21 Year 13 students travelled to Southern Star Abbey in Central Hawke’s Bay to spend the day with the Monks and join in their community prayer.  When we arrived Fr Niko (as pictured) had prepared morning tea for us and then the Abbot, Fr Brian, spoke to us about their vocation and celebrated Mass for us.  We were lucky enough to stand in the Monk’s choir stalls for Mass and this was a new experience for everybody.  We had lunch sitting on the verandah of the guest house and out in the garden.  We were taken on a tour of the Monastery grounds to see the Hermitage and the cemetery.  At 2pm we joined the community for afternoon prayer.  We had just got on the bus and the thunder and lightning started along with hail stones—lucky us!

Pasifika Leadership Training … “Leaders of Tomorrow”.  On Friday 17 March, Pacific Youth Leadership training was held at Upu Amata Pacific Training Centre for two days.  This was the first form of training for Pacific students in the Hawke’s Bay region.

Samantha Lasei Faitaua and I were chosen to participate in this event along with two leaders from each college in Hawke’s Bay.  Our aim was to recognise and provide an effective training experience that will enable young leaders to fulfil their potential and better serve their community and school and to bring together young Pacific people who have shown evidence of leadership qualities.  We had an opportunity to meet many leaders who influenced us from around New Zealand.  I had heaps of fun and thought there were some really amazing and talented young people there.
