Dear Parents and Caregivers, As I write my last newsletter it is with a deep sense of gratitude and sorrow that I bid farewell to the Sacred Heart College Community. Gratitude for the opportunity to serve as your Principal for the last 3½ years and for all that I have gained personally during that time. Thank you for the privilege of serving you, I feel great sadness at leaving this special school and beautiful Hawke’s Bay. What makes this school special is the Mission charism and the way it is embraced. There are wonderful people associated with the school—students, staff, families and parishes. You will always have a special place in my heart. The first term has gone very well and it is good to see the students settling into work routines and making the most of the wide range of opportunities available. We have had some wonderful events that have brought the students together and impressive teaching and learning throughout the school. As a school during Lent, we have been focusing on the work of CARITAS. This year focus is on ’we’ rather than ’me’ responding to disasters. I quote from Mother Teresa—”For faith to be true, it has to be generous and loving”. We work in a spirit of hope and each week have focused on a theme. The themes are: Encouragement, Friendship, Happiness, Patience, Prayer and Peacefulness. The enclosed Interim Report is a quick indication of how your daughter has settled this year. There is an opportunity to discuss progress and any concerns at the Parent Interviews in the last week of term—Wednesday, 12 April from 4.00—6.30pm in the gymnasium. I thank each of you for your support of the College. I know that I leave Sacred Heart College in good hands with Mr Steve Bryan as Principal and Ms Kirstin Daly as Deputy Principal. The school is in good heart and ready for the next stage in its long and proud history. May the peace of the risen Christ be with you all this Easter. God bless — Monica Johnson, Principal |

Young Leaders’ Seminar Thirteen Year 13 leaders with Mr Bryan and Mrs Nonu (parent) travelled to Wellington on Sunday March 19 to attend the Young Leaders’ Seminar at the Wellington Town Hall on Monday March 20. The students were billeted for the night by Year 13 students from St. Oran’s College and enjoyed the friendly liaison that such an experience offers. The Young Leaders’ Seminar was attended by 900 students from the lower half of the North Island. Speakers including: the Minister of Education, Mr. Steve Maharey; Rob Harley, TV Documentary Maker; and Christine Rankin, CEO of For the Sake of our Children Trust. The speakers made a big impact on the young leaders and some entertaining question times and interactive activities were organised to complement the speakers’ presentations. The Seminar certainly created a buzz of conversation in the school van on the trip home as Sacred Heart’s student leaders shared their ideas about the qualities and skills of the day’s presenters and the impact made on them. |

Year 13 Annual Retreat Day… On March 21 Year 13 students travelled to Southern Star Abbey in Central Hawke’s Bay to spend the day with the Monks and join in their community prayer. When we arrived Fr Niko (as pictured) had prepared morning tea for us and then the Abbot, Fr Brian, spoke to us about their vocation and celebrated Mass for us. We were lucky enough to stand in the Monk’s choir stalls for Mass and this was a new experience for everybody. We had lunch sitting on the verandah of the guest house and out in the garden. We were taken on a tour of the Monastery grounds to see the Hermitage and the cemetery. At 2pm we joined the community for afternoon prayer. We had just got on the bus and the thunder and lightning started along with hail stones—lucky us! - Sr Colleen Edgecombe, DRS |

Pasifika Leadership Training … “Leaders of Tomorrow”. On Friday 17 March, Pacific Youth Leadership training was held at Upu Amata Pacific Training Centre for two days. This was the first form of training for Pacific students in the Hawke’s Bay region. Samantha Lasei Faitaua and I were chosen to participate in this event along with two leaders from each college in Hawke’s Bay. Our aim was to recognise and provide an effective training experience that will enable young leaders to fulfil their potential and better serve their community and school and to bring together young Pacific people who have shown evidence of leadership qualities. We had an opportunity to meet many leaders who influenced us from around New Zealand. I had heaps of fun and thought there were some really amazing and talented young people there. —Lagi Farani Tuisalega (12HD) O se mafutaga fuafuaina lelei le fa’amoemoe na auai iai le toatele o teine ma tama talavou ile nofoaga e taua. “Upu Amata Pacific Training Centre”.
