Triathlon Madness What an exciting time the staff have had training for the Tremain Triathlon which was held on Sunday 11 March. Miss Calder rallied nine staff members to create three teams for this event— “Bryan’s Excuses” - Lynda Pipe, Steve Bryan, Raewyn Calder; Maxine Boag, Lyn Lewis, Karl Iaveta; Jill Massey, Kerin Greville, Charmaine Naidoo. On Wednesday, 21 March we entered three Junior teams and one Senior team in the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ Triathlon at Pandora Pond. All four teams did extremely well with the seniors coming fifth. Senior team: Anna Taylor, Ashleigh Neave, Alexandra Dickenson; Junior teams were Erinna Shroder, Kate Epplett, Kate Petherick; Melanie-Rose Hinton, Anna Mooney, Litecia Gyde; Naomi Poludore, Anastasia Fincaryk and Sophie Gittings. The postponement of this event for a week, meant the girls finished running in the dark. We look forward to more teams next year. |

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau— Easter looms and as we enter Holy Week and honour Jesus’ death and resurrection may I encourage you to nourish your daughter’s spiritual growth by attending the special liturgies that celebrate these occasions; a time of hope for us all. Many of our girls are commencing Sacramental programmes and again your encouragement and support is so essential to their commitment.
This short term has been full of student activities. Congratulations to all girls who have set themselves goals and made such a positive start to the year. Parent interviews next week are the opportunity for you to share your expectations with teachers and ask about the first evaluation of your daughter’s Personal Plan. We would also love you to take five minutes to complete a Parent Questionnaire while you are here. As lively debate over the merits of NCEA is reported through the media, at Sacred Heart we promote a realisation of every girl’s potential and strive to implement teaching practices that assist them.
The Board of Trustees’ three year term has now expired and we are in the process of elections and new appointments. We have two retiring trustees; Fiona McElroy as Finance Chairperson and more latterly as BOT Chairperson has given great leadership and direction to the Board and her numerous requests for grants have netted the College thousands of dollars. Mike O’Malley as a Proprietor’s Representative and Chair of the Operations Committee has always promoted the highest standards and values for Sacred Heart. We thank them for their generous service.
The P.T.A. met for the first time recently and a new look committee inspires much confidence for our school community and projects.
Thank you to all families who dutifully ensure their school account is paid up. All money received ensures your daughter receives the best opportunities Sacred Heart offers.
I have already enrolled the first student for 2008. It is important that we are aware of siblings of non-preference students so please confirm these with a phone call to the office, and spread the word to families who have intentions of sending their daughters to us.
On behalf of the staff I wish you all a very happy Easter, peace and goodwill in the hope of the risen Christ.
Regards and God’s blessings — Steve Bryan, Principal |

Geography Field Trip: Last week the Year 11 Geography class took a quick trip to Pernel Fruitworld near Hastings as part of their study of horticulture. A beautiful day, a guided tour and plenty of free fruit made the trip most worthwhile. Thanks to Mrs Torr for providing transport and to our van driver, Mrs Clode. |

Survive-a-Slum: On Friday and Saturday 23 and 24 March 72 students from Sacred Heart College and St John’s College gathered at our College to experience life living in a slum. During the weekend, the students learned about our global warming problems, poverty and slept in cardboard box structures. The weekend was run by Bill Dysart (HB Youth Co-ordinator), Chanel Hoera (Youth Minister) and help from parents. They raised money for Caritas. This was a wonderful learning experience for all students. |

|
Pilgrimage for Peace: On Catholic Schools Day on 2 May, our College will be doing a Pilgrimage for Peace around the school grounds at 12.30pm. All welcome.
Caritas: On Tuesday 27 March each Form Class managed a fundraising activity. A wonderful festive atmosphere was created on the green and we raised $1,171.60 for Caritas. Well done girls!
Easter Festivities: We encourage all families to attend the Holy Week Ceremonies: Mass on Holy Thursday night, Veneration of the Cross on Good Friday afternoon and Vigil Mass on Saturday evening. Check your Parish timetable for service times.

Royal New Zealand Ballet: A group of students has been invited to attend a performance of “Tutus on Tour” on 2 April. Enjoy girls!
Debating: Senior A: team consists of Rosalie Hall-Boyle, Isabel Mooney and Alexandra Laird with Coach Mr David Brown. We are quite a fierce debating team because we like to win! Our debates this year have been very good in that we have won one and lost two. Recently we attended a debate hosted by Taradale High School. We debated the prepared moot “that the ban on commercial whaling should be removed” and the limited preparation moot “that state schools should provide breakfast to their students”—it was awesome! - Rosalie Hall-Boyle and Isabel Mooney (12CS)
Senior B: The team consists of Abigail and Ashleigh Neave, Jessie Eagle and Veronica Noetzli. They debated in the Senior section for the first time this year and have won one of their two debates. The prepared debate was “that the ban on commercial whaling should be removed” and the impromptu moot was “that state schools should provide breakfast”. They were victorious in their prepared debate against Iona College but unfortunately lost the impromptu against Karamu High School. Well done girls!
Mother Daughter Book Group: Our Mother Daughter book group has had its first two meetings for 2007. We have been very pleased to welcome some new members to the group and have all thoroughly enjoyed sharing our best reads of the summer. If anyone is interested in joining us or would like to find out more, please contact Vivienne Price ph. 8447435 or Cynthia Perry, College Library ph. 8353761. Meetings for Term 2 are Wednesdays, 2 and 30 May and 27 June.
Our girls are busy rehearsing for this exciting annual event on 25 May —our theme for 2007 is “Cultures of New Zealand”. Feet are tapping, sewing machines are humming, set designers are creating—good luck girls! This year it is to be held in the beautiful Hawke’s Bay Opera House in Hastings. Tickets are available for public sale from 10 May —Book through Ticket Direct on 0800 484 2538.
Hawke’s Bay Festival of Bands: On Saturday 25 March St John’s/Sacred Heart Concert Band played in this festival at Lindisfarne College. It was a small-scale festival with 10 bands competing. What a great opportunity for our students to get into Band mode. To top it off they achieved a Silver medal. A great start for the year. The Nationals are in Palmerston North in August and they are going to strive for Gold. A big thank you to Mr Lundall, Mr Sullivan and Mrs Ngui for their time and commitment and to the band members for their great effort. Well done! |
