March 2008

Text Box: Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau,

We enter Holy Week, with our personal intentions of Lent, to recognise the saving love and sacrifice of Christ’s death on the cross.  Join with your parish family to celebrate these great occasions and give witness to our beliefs and faith in God.

Students are fully engaged in classwork, homework and co-curricular activities.  A Progress Report will be posted in the first week of April followed by parent interviews.  These are the first opportunities to share your aspirations and goals for your daughter.  I encourage you to make appointments to meet with teachers.

Full attendance at school is very important; every absence equals disengagement with learning.  Your support and encouragement for attendance and high expectations will have positive spin-offs for your daughter’s achievement.

I congratulate the many students competing and experiencing success in swimming, athletics, triathlons, kayaking, rowing, cycling, volleyball, tennis and cricket; needless to say there is a big demand for coaches and managers.  Winter sport will exacerbate this situation so if you can help out with any of our sports teams contact the College office.

Enclosed with this newsletter is a fresh copy of the foundation document for Catholic schools; it highlights the essential characteristics of Catholic education that we subscribe to as stakeholders in Sacred Heart College.

           I wish you all a very peaceful Easter and offer this reflection which was shared with Trustees at our most recent Board meeting;

“Jesus never retreated from the social and political problems of his day into a private nirvana.  He lived among the poor and marginalised.  He was human; he sweated, got sore feet and chapped lips.  He laughed loudly, cried bitterly and loved deeply.  He spoke the truth with power to such an extent that it brought a death sentence down on his head.  Above all he took his direction from his own inner depths.  Prayer and solitude were both the mainstay of, and the compass for his spiritual life.  In the end he surrendered this life back to the course of all life.”

Father God, enrich us with your love so that we can be more like your

 son, Jesus. Amen

Regards and God’s blessings  — Steve Bryan, Principal

We farewelled our International students who are returning to Japan.  They have attended our school since the beginning of Term 1 and have made many friends.

World Day of Prayer … An ecumenical service was held at St Patrick’s Church on Friday 7 March to celebrate the theme “God’s Wisdom Provides New Understanding”.  Mr Lundall attended with a group of our students who sang two special songs and helped to lead the congregational singing.

Year 9 and 10 ‘Meet the Teachers’ evening … On Tuesday 26 February our Year 9 and 10 students and their parents gathered for a BBQ tea at our College.  There was a wonderful turnout on a gorgeous evening.  This gave our staff an excellent opportunity to get to know our new families.  Thank you all for coming.

We would like as many parents to support us in beautifying the school.  Please bring along your garden implements, e.g. rakes and shovels. Help us tidy up some areas ready for O’Shea Shield competition and the visit from other Colleges.  If anyone has any Agapanthus or ground covers, they would be much appreciated.   … Your PTA supporting our College and our girls

Text Box: Attention! … School will be closed on Tuesday 25 March as part of Easter weekend. This is a Ministry of Education directive.

Health Notice: Recently a student at Sacred Heart College has had whooping cough (pertussis), this is a communicable disease and this notice is intended to provide information about the infection. Whooping cough is a disease caused by a small bug called Bordetella pertussis. It is spread by sick people coughing droplets onto other people. Thanks to immunisation it is now a very uncommon disease but it is important to know the signs and symptoms.

Whooping cough can take one or two weeks to develop and starts with the symptoms of a runny nose and a cough, this nasty cough tends to occur in bouts and sometimes sick people make a “whoop” at the end of the coughing bout. The cough can continue for several weeks.

If you are concerned that someone in your family has these symptoms the first thing is to see your family doctor, as there are several diseases which can cause symptoms like whooping cough. An antibiotic called erythromycin is usually prescribed for people with whooping cough. It can reduce the symptoms if given early enough and it stops the patient spreading the disease to others.
Please contact the school’s Public Health Nurse, Sarah Davies, if you would like any further information (06 834 1815)

Library Corner!

Kids Who Read Succeed

This year our goal in the library is to hook all our students on to reading.

Why is recreational reading so important?

Research from the OECD has found that reading enjoyment is more important for children’s educational success than their family’s socioeconomic status.

I strongly encourage you as parents to help your child’s learning by actively supporting and encouraging your child to read. Join the local library and encourage the girls to use our library. Talk to your daughter about what she is currently reading. Enjoy books together!
