Welcome Powhiri for Miss Daly

Tuesday, 2 May. Our College welcomed staff and students from Taradale High School to our Powhiri for our new Deputy Principal, Miss Daly.   She has settled in very well and loves being part of our special community.

 Powhiri for Mrs Johnson

Sunday, 30 April.  Mr Marshall, Mrs Te-Ripo, Mr Lundall, Mrs Stewart and Mrs Pipe travelled to Auckland along with Tara Kelly,  Sara-Leigh Nonu and eight Kapa Haka girls to support Mrs Johnson at her Powhiri at Marist College, Mt Albert.  This is the first time a group has travelled out of town to hand over a Principal to her new school.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

It is a privilege that I write to you for the first time as Principal of Sacred Heart College.  Our wonderful school has been serving the Catholic educational needs of the young ladies of Hawke’s Bay for 139 years and so to lead our school in such an important and influential endeavour is indeed an honour.

The adolescent years that your daughters live in are precious times that deserve the utmost care and considered practice.  It is imperative therefore that everything we do in shaping the destiny of the girls is embedded in the values of Jesus Christ and the Mission Sisters who founded Sacred Heart College.

The Retreats girls have been involved in lately have given them opportunities to reflect on their relationships, especially with God.  Developing an understanding of God’s place in their lives is important for them to understand their own being.

Terms 2 and 3 are important academic terms. Regular homework and revision are necessary components of their weekly routines.  By the end of this term you will have received full reports detailing academic progress.  You will have an opportunity to meet teachers.

Time management is often a difficult skill during these months because of the demands of homework, winter sport, after school jobs and leisure pursuits.  Using the school diary, prioritising activities and frequent communication are ways of keeping a balance in the busy life of a teenage student.

Winter seems to have struck the Bay relatively early, I am informed.   For the hardy souls still in summer uniform a reminder that all girls must be in full winter uniform after Queen’s Birthday weekend.  Winter uniform is looking very smart with black socks and black shoes complementing the new blazer.  The new blazer looks very smart.

I am thoroughly enjoying the warm friendly spirit I encounter when I talk with the girls or with parents I  meet.  I look forward to making your acquaintance and sharing with you the rich tapestry of our Catholic College.

God’s blessings on you all—    Steve Bryan, Principal

Caritas Carnival … Everyone participated in the fundraising activities where each class organised a stall to raise money for Caritas.  Lollies in a Jar was a favourite along with the Cake Walk and Raffles.  We raised approximately $900—the most ever!  Well

done girls!

O’Shea Shield A wonderful group of 16 motivated and enthusiastic girls headed to Porirua to match the best in the region on the weekend of 12, 13, 14 May. They looked incredibly smart in their new blazers, black socks and black shoes. Everyone supported each other along with our fellow school St John's. We had teams entered in Religious Questions, Impromptu Speech, Junior Speech, Oratory, Drama and Scripture Readings. Everyone performed to their potential and did us proud.  Ms Daly and Mr Bryan were somewhat exhausted Monday morning but it was worth it!

See you at O'Shea Shield - Sacred Heart College, Lower Hutt next year.  A big thankyou to Mrs McElroy and Mr Dysart for coming along and supporting us over the weekend.

Year 11 Day for Reflection … The girls responded well to this event, the first time for a couple of years that this year level has been offered this style of reflection/retreat.  There were three activity rotations so each girl was able to experience a different way of praying: the labyrinth, receive forgiveness and be reconciled with God and friends: the sacrament of Reconciliation and see the importance of respecting each other: the community building activity.

“Sister Colleen’s exercise made me think and understand others more”

The community-building helped me understand more things and to see that all people are the same”

Special thanks to Bill Dysart, Hawke’s Bay Catholic Youth Co-ordinator, a good friend of our school, for his continued involvement and enthusiasm.  Our priests give us sterling service also.  Retreat time is one of the occasions when our young people see and feel church in action and experience and the love of God in a special way.              - Wendy Clark, Chaplain

“Reconciliation was the most important experience for me as it is a time to start on a good note and be forgiven”

The labyrinth gave me more understanding of what kind of pain Jesus went through for us”

“The labyrinth showed me how my life is a journey”

Royal New Zealand Ballet Workshop …

Earlier this year, the Royal New Zealand Ballet Company offered our students a special opportunity to participate in a 'Creative Dance Workshop'. A group of 14 Year 9 students took up this incredible offer.  On 5 April they spent an hour with Louise Fielder from the Ballet Company, learning about aspects of the performance they were to see later that week. They practised some steps and dances, explored characterisation and generally had a great time, as you can see from the photos For many of the students, it was a real insight into some of the 'behind the scenes' aspects of dance and performance.  Later in the week they enjoyed the performance of "The Wedding".  An experience made all the more rich by the knowledge they had gained in the workshop.

Congratulations to …

Y10 Debating Team: Had a wonderful debate against William Colenso College.  They negated the topic “That Country Life is Better than City Life”.  It was a strong battle and the girls only lost by two points.

Y12 Debating team (Lily Oliver, Emma McKay, Natalia Mackenzie and Casey O’Donoghue): Travelled to Central Hawke’s Bay College to negate the controversial moot “That Euthanasia should be Legalised”.  Some thought-provoking points were put forward from both sides and the final result was a draw.

Natasha Parmenter: Danced at the Champion of Champions Championship of Australia Highland Dancing competition in Adelaide. She gained 1st and 3rd in her Sword Dance, 4th in the Highland Fling and Seann Triubhas—Excellent!  Natasha flies to Korea in October as one of a group of 50 New Zealand Highland dancers invited to take part in the Wonju Tattoo.

Catherine Joule: Awarded the “Aotearoa Award” for her involvement in NZ Guiding.  This is the top award for Girl Guides in New Zealand. Well done.

YEAR 9 ADVENTURE PLUS –PINNACLE CHALLENGE
The Adventure Plus team came from Wednesday 17 May to Friday 19 May to offer some exciting challenges to each Year 9 class. The programme offered students individual challenges as well as encouraged class bonding with team co-operative activities, including climbing up a rock wall, abseiling down a 10metre wall, walking along the high wire (some even did that blind-folded!).  The main excitement of the day was the trapeze which was a 1metre jump across, but 10 metres above the ground! Despite the rather cool weather all students got involved in a very positive way and have been “raving’ about it since!
It was a real good experience because lots of people achieved their amazing goals”  Robyne Withers 9GE
“The Pinnacle Challenge was really ‘challenging’. My heart was beating faster than it was normally!”   Rosita Vanu 9GE
“I thought that it was so much fun and the best part was the trapeze and the rock climbing”  - Jaelyn Toko-Hay 9GE
“It was an amazing experience!” - Judy Faka’osi 9GE
It was so cool and fun, even if it was in the rain!” - Rebekah Hodges 9GE
“I felt it was awesome and that everyone did an amazing job supporting others” Laura

PLAYING SPORT IS A VALUABLE EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS
Winter team sports are now in full swing and a large number of Sacred Heart students are involved in a variety of codes. The participation level is high with 12 Netball teams, 2 Soccer teams, 2 Hockey teams, 5 Badminton teams, 1 Basketball team, 2 Squash teams, 1 Rugby team and 3 Canoe Polo teams.
Those of us who coach, manage or are involved in sports teams know the value of the activity and recognise the special relationships that can be developed between student and teacher and/or parent outside the classroom/home situation. Research clearly shows that students who are active in extra-curricular activities are much more likely to succeed academically than those who are not involved.
What is not always appreciated is the huge level of support needed for these students to become successful. This support is essential if the young person is to be able to sustain the commitment needed to be part of a team.
We always appreciate the support of parents/caregivers in many ways: prompt payment of fees, assistance with transport, positive cheering on the sideline, etc. Our student coaches certainly need and appreciate all the parental support they can get. We know that community support will enable these students to get involved and all the positive outcomes from participating in sport will naturally follow.
