Catholic Schools’ Day

Great excitement and reverence greeted our invited guests to our celebration for Catholic Schools’ Day on Wednesday,  2 May.  We were joined by Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, Fathers from our local Parishes, students from Reignier and St Joseph’s Maori Girls’ College, members of our Trust Board and Board of Trustees, parents and friends.   Our own Mission Sister, Sister Colleen Edgecombe, created a Pilgrimage for Peace which involved processing around our school grounds and stopping for prayerful reflection at significant sites.  This culminated in all our students writing a special prayer on satin ribbons. These ribbons will be woven together to form a wall hanging.   It was a wonderful opportunity for our community to reflect on the gift of peace and celebrate this special day.

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau—

We have special cause to celebrate our Special Character of late.  Catholic Schools’ Day was shared with invited guests: . During a peace pilgrimage we all reflected on the special privilege we share of a Catholic education. The O’Shea Shield, the public speaking and drama competition among the 17 colleges of the Wellington Archdiocese, was a tremendous success for our girls.  Hosted by Sacred Heart Lower Hutt we competed with great pride and distinction and won for the first time the Religious Questions section.  Special congratulations to that team of Helena Brown, Rachel Doohan and Anna Aldridge.  Next year we have the honour of hosting this wonderful event. Form Masses and Retreats are being celebrated regularly at school and I encourage you to accompany your daughter to Sunday Mass.

The new B.O.T. has held its first full meeting and the dynamics and enthusiasm are very exciting for our future.  The P.T.A. too are in full momentum and your support for their major raffle is appreciated.  The Charter for 2007 was adopted at the B.O.T. meeting.  This document containing our Strategic Goals, Annual Plan and Targets for 2007 may be accessed on our school website or through the school office.  A parent calendar for the remainder of the year is also on the website.

Term 2 is an important time in the pursuit of academic goals.  Assessment Week looms for senior students and a focused, responsible commitment to their academic responsibilities is expected from all girls. While there are many sporting and cultural involvements, careful time management and a balance between work, recreation and rest is essential.  Monitoring your daughter’s involvements is important so she can do justice to all her commitments.

Thank you to all parent coaches and managers of our eight sporting codes this winter.  I look forward to sharing your company on the sidelines of fields and courts in coming months.

As the colours of the Hawke’s Bay landscape give way to golds and browns our winter uniform is being worn more often.  From Queen’s Birthday weekend all girls must be in the full winter uniform.  Thank you for ensuring our uniform is so well presented; it enhances the image of our school.  Early notice for you that the first day of Term 3, Monday 16 July, will double as a staff P.D. day and for the girls a P.T.A. organised ‘work day’.  Income from this day will be channelled for the students’ benefits.

The World Youth Day Cross will be here at school on Saturday 23 June.  This will be a special opportunity for our girls to embrace the spirit of this great event.  I leave you with a prayer that captures the essence of a Catholic School …

Let it be known that

JESUS

Is the reason for our schools.

He is the unseen yet ever present

teacher in its classes.

He is the model of its community

and the inspiration of its

children and teachers

O’Shea Shield 2007

At the 62nd O’Shea Shield at Sacred Heart College, Lower Hutt recently, we were the  winners of the Religious Questions section of the competition. The team comprising of Anna Aldridge, Helena Brown and Rachel Doohan answered questions put to them on the document “Ecclesia in Oceania“ impressing the Adjudicators with their application of the Synod’s Proclamation on Evangelisation to their own personal lives.  The weekend celebrated the 17 Catholic schools of the Wellington and Palmerston North Diocese competing in public speaking and drama events.  Next year, Sacred Heart College Napier will host the O’Shea Shield. Everyone who travelled to Lower Hutt performed admirably—our team consisted off:

RETREATS

Year 11 students experienced The Labyrinth, Meditation and Reconciliation. From the evaluation it was made very clear that the majority of girls had thoroughly enjoyed the retreat.  Having the three different sessions meant the different spiritualities of each student could be nourished in unique ways.  The result was most of the students expressing they had made a spiritual connection with Jesus at some point during the day.

Year 12 students also experienced Meditation and Reconciliation as well as Creative Prayer and Discussion on the Catholic Church.

From the Year 12 evaluation, again the majority of girls had enjoyed their day, been really involved in each session and at some stage felt closer to God.

Both year groups were positive and cheerful.  It was great to spend the day with such special people encouraging God’s love for us all.

Congratulations to … Lily Oliver and Desma Burns for participating in the selection evening to be Chris Tremain’s Youth Parliament Representative for Napier.  Both students spoke splendidly.

Geography/Art Trip to Cape Kidnappers:

On the last day of Term One, 32 Yr 12 Art & Geography students travelled to Cape Kidnappers as part of their NCEA Level 2 course work. The group, accompanied by Mr Perry, Mrs Nuttall and Mrs Greville, climbed aboard tractor trailers at Clifton Beach and embarked on an adventure ride to this iconic landscape feature.  While the geographers studied strata and geology etc, the artists sketched and took photos which are now being transformed into amazing (I hope!) artworks back in the classroom.  It was a very worthwhile educational experience, as well as a most enjoyable way to spend the final day of a very busy and productive term.

Sacred Heart / St John’s Concert Band played on Sunday 20 May at our combined Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes in Havelock North.  This was an excellent opportunity for the band to practise for the Nationals in August.  We have a talented group of musicians and the band is sounding great!

The students from 10WU were the first Yr 10 form class to spend three days in the workforce.  A big thank you to all those employers for supporting Sacred Heart in this very worthwhile programme.  Once again our students have received some lovely comments, e.g. “Happy to have more students like that”; “Very polite”; “Uses initiative”; “well mannered”; “helpful and polite and a pleasure to have on work experience”.

New Technology

This year the Board has added to the three data projectors that were already in the school.  There are now a further five projectors, two still to be installed.  The really exciting new additions this year have been an interactive whiteboard and two interactive pads.  The interactive whiteboard has been installed in Mrs Koender’s Mathematics classroom.  Mr Perry will be using one of the new pads in his Geography room.  Mr Perry and Mrs Koenders are undertaking intensive training in the use of this interactive technology.  The girls who have used the board and pads so far have been very excited about this new method for enhancing learning.
