O’Shea Shield Winners 2008 What a huge thrill—the icing on the cake after 12 months of getting ready for hosting this competition. The sun shone for us, the school sparkled, our students were a credit, our staff worked tirelessly to make the weekend the success that it was. Well done everyone! |

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau,
The O’Shea Shield weekend was a magnificent celebration of Special Character events among the 17 Colleges of the Wellington Archdiocese. To win the Shield (1st equal with Sacred Heart College Lower Hutt) was an outstanding achievement by our team of Yr 10-13 girls. We have received many complimentary emails and cards acknowledging the school’s hospitality and particularly the impressions made by our students. They were wonderful representatives of our school and their families. The O’Shea Mass also highlighted the witness of our young people to their Catholic beliefs and values.
St John’s host a 5pm Sunday Mass once a month and I encourage you to attend this combined schools’ Mass with your daughter. Our Youth Minister, Chanel Hoera, will soon be offering students the opportunity to commit themselves to Baptismal and Eucharistic programmes. If your daughter feels inclined to deepen her faith commitment your support for these programmes is welcome.
We welcome Mr Philip (Huck) Berry to our staff. He will be teaching our students Physics and Science.
The Parent Teacher interviews at the end of Term 1 were very well attended. Exactly 50% of our parents met with their daughter’s teachers; a strong connection between home and school. An Assessment Week for Years 11-13 is timetabled for immediately after Queen’s Birthday; girls must prepare themselves by regular homework and thorough revision. Any concerns you might have with the progress/development of your daughter please contact her year level Dean (listed on Pg7).
Winter sports are fully underway and we are represented in many codes; my thanks to the parent coaches and managers who are supporting Sacred Heart sport. We expect all girls to attend practices and present themselves for all games in correct sports uniform. Winter uniform for school is compulsory after Queen’s Birthday Weekend and high standards of personal grooming, e.g. tidy hair, cuffs not frayed, are all required. The full uniform code is displayed on our website.
Sacred Heart aims to develop the whole person; spiritual, academic, cultural, sporting and social dimensions. This is never more evident than in these middle months of the school year. Let us celebrate together the achievements of our young women, continue to encourage their every effort and call on the strength and love of the Holy Spirit to watch over us all.
Regards and God’s blessings — Steve Bryan, Principal |

Caritas News: We raised $1323.60 which was a really great effort. This will be used to help children in Nepal, women in New Guinea, to help rebuild homes in Sri Lanka and the care of children who are victims of war in Uganda. Thank you to everyone for their efforts.
ANZAC Day Service: Lucy Whitlow represented our school and paid tribute on behalf of our students. She delivered a very commanding speech about her Great, Great Grandfather who died at Gallipoli.

Look at this wonderful outfit. It has a fashionable double layer with handkerchief peaked hem and the matching top has a lace trim down the front. Well done Briar.
Fair Trade Fortnight: To support the Trade Aid Shop and raise awareness of world trading, 10SC sold Fair Trade chocolate. They raised $765.00 and entered the Junk to Green Funk competition. The entries are currently on show in the Trade Aid Shop in Emerson Street.
Regional Environmental Youth Forum: Three students attended the Regional Council’s Forum at Pettigrew Green Arena on Wednesday 14 May to gain a better understanding about carbon footprints and waste recycling, with practical advice on how to use this in school. We are looking to create an environmental group from this experience.
Geography Trip to Mahia: Year 13 spent the day viewing coastlines and analysing processes between Napier and Mahia. They visited New Zealand’s largest tombolo formation, i.e. Mahia. |

The Big Sing is an annual competition for Secondary School Choirs. This year we have two choirs competing—the Marian Choir and the Pacifica Horizon Choir. Members have been rehearsing over the last few months and are looking forward to the opportunity to perform on stage in the Napier Municipal Theatre on Wednesday 11 June. Schools compete during the day and come together for an evening concert—open to the public.
Chamber Music Contest is upon us again. We have six groups competing over the weekend Friday 20 June to Sunday 22 June. These comprise percussion and vocal/instrumental ensembles. The contest is held at the Century Theatre. The District Final will be held on Sunday evening.
Hawke’s Bay Barbershop Festival is being held at Taradale High School on Sunday 8 June from 1pm until 4pm. This competition is a first for our girls. The competition is open to the public with entry by gold coin donation. The National Finals will be held in Lower Hutt on Wednesday 20 August.
The local heats of the 2008 Smokefree Rockquest were held last Saturday 24 May at Napier Boys’ High School. Toni Makea performed in the group “Intermars” alongside students from Havelock North High School and Napier Boys’ High School. The local Final will be on Saturday 7 June at the Pettigrew Green Arena.
Culinary Challenge: Hanna and Jessica entered the Central Branch Salon Culinaire Hawke’s Bay Competition under two sections. Both entered the Nestlés Food Services Junior Chef Team Challenge. Jessica entered the Lamb Dish Contemporary style section. The competition was fierce as they competed against apprentice chefs from local restaurants who already had three years’ experience. The girls cooked an entrée of tiger prawns followed by a main of a Thai green curry chicken dish. They won the Silver medal and gained second place in the Junior Chef event. They are now preparing for local competitions in June and the National Competitions in Auckland in August. We thank our sponsor trainer Craig Ireland from Hospitality Solutions and the girls’ families for their support and congratulate Jessica and Hanna for all their hard work and dedication. - Angela McKee, HOD Technology
Brenda-Lee Locke was selected to attend the Navy Adventure Challenge that was held at the Devonport Naval Base in Auckland during April. Well done Brenda-Lee. |

Library Corner! Congratulations to Sarah Cotter who was our first student to achieve our Sensational Reader Award. Since Sarah’s presentation at Assembly many of our students and some teachers are reading their way to also becoming Sensational Readers.
Here are some more thoughts about the value of reading. 1 It develops your creativity. 2 It improves your communication skills. 3 It increases your vocabulary.
With the cooler winter months upon us what better activity is there but to curl up with a good book. Start reading a book today. Make it a family activity over the winter months. Mother and Daughter Book Club on Thursday 19th June 7.30 in the Library.
