A NIGHT OF A THOUSAND STARS... |

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau— There is much to tell you of our recent (Sister Colleen went too) pilgrimage to France. It was given the name “Heartland Tour” and was focused specifically on the origins of our Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions. Highlights included locating a small village, Cuves, of 25 inhabitants where Euphrasie Barbier, the foundress, served her novitiate. Then later in Lyon or more particularly the Abbey of St Rambert en Bugey, a beautiful mountain retreat where Sister Marie Benedict lectured to us on the charism of the Sisters’ Congregation. These unique insights revealed to us the spirituality of Euphrasie and her indomitable will which we of course benefit from today at Sacred Heart. I will attempt to enlarge upon these revelations in subsequent newsletters and gatherings. We are now only days away from senior external exams and I encourage you to support the girls in their exam preparations and organisation. Plenty of sleep and good nutrition are important pre-requisites before writing exams. Our junior students too embark upon assessments from Thursday, 16 November. The Education Review Office (E.R.O.) presented their oral report to our B.O.T. at the conclusion of their visit and it highlights many areas of good performance. The College is in a very good position to meet the goals of extending teaching and learning practices. Surveys have been distributed lately: Special Character, Māori consultation. Thank you for your feedback. The information gathered allows us to identify areas of performance that we can plan to both reinforce and develop. Our recent Arts Festival was a wonderful night. The talent and creativity on display astounded me and I was so proud of all our performers. Thank you for all the support you give your daughters—it was a rich payback on the night. Our ‘sPACIFICally Pasifika’ group won numerous awards recently and proudly performed in a variety of roles. These two occasions highlight that culture is very much on the radar at Sacred Heart. Sadly, I have received three staff resignations of late. Mrs Gopal our HOD Mathematics is moving to Australia, Mrs Clark our Chaplain is moving to Christchurch and Mrs Burke a Teacher Aide to Auckland. I thought people moved to Hawke’s Bay! We will miss the wonderful commitment and devotion of these ladies and wish them much happiness in their new homes. Congratulations though to Ms Daly who didn’t waste any time once she commenced her maternity leave (about 36 hours) on the birth of her son, Maz. Both are doing well. In the remaining four weeks of school there are numerous related events. I look forward to meeting you at Leavers’ Dinner, Prizegivings or Thanksgiving Mass. Your support for any occasion is appreciated and highlights the special relationship between home and school which we value. I wish you much peace and goodwill over the weeks leading up to Christmas. Regards and God’s blessings — Steve Bryan, Principal

Confirmation 2006 The Bishop’s homilies at the recent Confirmation Masses were quite inspiring. Bishop Peter Cullinane spoke about a brilliant young American athlete who never seemed to enjoy his great achievements. Sadly it took a life-changing accident to turn this young man’s life around. He ‘found God’ the hard way. Bishop Owen thanked the young people for “standing up and being counted”. He assured them that their commitment, though a personal one, affected the whole community. We benefit from their witnessing to their faith as our faith is also strengthened. Confirmation was an awesome sacrament, a way to discover or rediscover the Holy Spirit and we congratulate our recently confirmed students: Amy Drew, Alice Russ, Morgan Pedersen, Olivia Engelbrecht, Kali West, Kelly Lategan, Dayle Fulton, Alexandra Laird, Oriwia Solomon, Katy Oliver, Selina Maka, Morgan Dysart, Elizabeth Neilson, Katherine Wynands, Emma Stothart and Christina Ferrick. It was just great to see these young people carry out their Mass ministries with such dignity. We commend and encourage them to continue their connection with church and with God. - Wendy Clark, Chaplain
Kagoshima Junshin Girls’ High School Visit: Twenty four excited and nervous young ladies arrived in Napier on 28 October for a twelve day exchange with our school. They had an action packed programme that included two nights in Rotorua, Guy Fawkes night, Cape Kidnappers and many other activities both in school and out and about. A Sayonara Party was held to say goodbye and very tearful young women left on the bus to Auckland then home to Kagoshima, Japan. Some of the comments that were heard around and about—”I could make some really great friends if I was here longer” - “the scenery and the views were just magic” - “my homestay family really took me into their hearts”. Each day we saw our students and our guests mix with each other—as one family said, “somehow they touched our hearts”. A sign of a very successful exchange. Thank you to all homestay families, teachers and student helpers. - Carol Murphy, Co-ordinator |
