Arts Festival On Wednesday 17 October we celebrated our annual Arts Festival at the Century Theatre. It was a truly magical evening of entertainment involving performers and behind the scenes workers. The near-capacity audience was treated to a feast of quality performances from talented vocalists, musicians, actors and dancers. The evening flowed seamlessly thanks to the super organisational skills of our Arts Co-ordinator, Sally Rutgers and HOD Arts, Mrs Greville. To coincide with the Festival, the PTA held their Art Exhibition and Silent Auction in the Founders Room. This was also a roaring success, raising lots of money for additional reading resources for the students. All in all, it was a wonderful event. A big thank you to Sally, all the performers and backstage crew, staff who willingly gave their time, especially Mr Lundall and Mr D Brown and to everyone who attended. We also acknowledge and thank our Principal, Mr Bryan, for his enthusiastic support and encouragement of the Arts at Sacred Heart College. |

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau, Last week we hosted the book launch of “Missionary Beyond Boundaries” which is a biography of the life of Euphrasie Barbier the foundress of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions. Sister Marie Benedict the book’s author was with us all the way from Lyon in France. Together with Bishop Peter Cullinane, Marist Fathers, many Sisters and friends of the College, we celebrated this account of a great woman to whom we owe our existence. We congratulate the girls receiving the Sacrament of Baptism at 9.30am Mass at St Patrick’s Church on Sunday. These girls and a further group will undertake a programme for Holy Eucharist in a couple of weeks. Our Year 12 girls are involved in a Leadership programme that will culminate with the announcement of Head Girl for 2008 at our Prizegiving. The other school leaders will be announced at the start of next year. Our current Year 13 leaders have been wonderful role models and have served the College in many areas. The NCEA examinations are imminent. They start November 20. Next Wednesday our NZQA Examination Manager, Mrs Mel White, will outline to the girls all of the conditions for these public examinations. They must ensure they are properly organised and prepared for these important times. For the inaugural awarding of NCEA Certificates with Merit and Excellence Endorsements, we encourage our girls to reach for the stars. Meanwhile Years 9 and 10 commence their school examinations on November 15; 1 hour for Year 9 and 2 hours for Year 10 . Results from these will give you a good account of your daughter’s progress. At the end of next week Mrs Judy Jackson our acting Head of Physical Education will end her term. Judy has been a fantastic asset for the year; her contribution has been highly valued by staff and girls. We wish Judy much happiness in 2008. Mrs Sue Wakeling returns to the PE role after her year of study. The whanau hui at Te Aranga Marae was a great success. The sharing of ideas about what works for young Maori to achieve has triggered a flow of information between school and whanau which will benefit us all. Our Arts Festival was a splendid evening. The range and depth of cultural talent at our school is amazing. Congratulations to all performers and special acknowledgement of their coaches and tutors. All of your calendars are probably bursting with commitments at this time of the year but two occasions which we would love you to attend are our Prizegiving and Thanksgiving Mass on December 12. We have two school days following before we end the year. Maximum attendance is expected from Years 9 and 10 on both of the days. While the rest of the country oscillates between winter and spring we are into the promise of summer. I wish for your family good times and peace in the season of Christmas.
Regards and God’s blessings — Steve Bryan, Principal |

Group talks about expectations for school were shared, a nice supper was served and the Kapa Haka group performed items for everybody at the end of the evening. It was a wonderful night celebrating the special contribution our whanau make to Sacred Heart College.
It is always very exciting when there is a new member to the family! Congratulations to these girls who have heard the call to be baptised and make their First Holy Communion. Year 11 Art Exhibition: On 26 October, Year 11 Art folios were displayed in the Cultural Centre. There were lots of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ as students admired the stunning work created by their peers. The parents and grandparents who came were suitably impressed. The theme of “Self Portrait” was interpreted in a range of ways with great skill and imagination. Thank you to all those who came along and especially to the students who worked so hard to create their masterpieces. - Kerin Greville, HOD Arts
