Text Box: Push Play Day
Friday 4 November was Push Play Day. The task was set to get the whole school active. Both staff and students participated in a 45 minute ‘body jam’ session which is a mixture of aerobics and dancing.  The school assembled up on the green feeling very positive and enthusiastic.
It was a beautiful sunny day - just perfect. The participation of the students and staff was high and Rebecca from Bay City Gym made such a good impression on us all. To liven things up even more, we had a House competition to see which House performed the best and participated to the highest level. Our judge, Sister Colleen, decided the competition was won by both Marian and Holderness Houses. Thanks to Rebecca for coming to our school and giving us such an exciting and energetic workout. Thanks also to the staff and students who participated and to Mr Lundall for setting up the sound system. Overall it was a very successful and fun event.       -Miss Harkness

Text Box: Bishop Peter’s Visit…
On Monday 7 November Bishop Peter Cullinane came to speak with Year 13 and some Year 12 students.  He had already written a personal letter to every student in Year 12 and 13 in the Diocese and
wanted to encourage young people to think about their faith and keep searching for the answers.  He assured them that the answers will come with wisdom and age.  He was assisted by Kathleen Field who is the Chaplain from Massey University.
Staff met Bishop Peter and Kathleen for morning tea and sang an old Hebrew Blessing over them for the work that they do. Some comments from our students …
“A rewarding experience that we can take
a lot away from” … “Bishop Peter was very approachable and able to answer all our questions” … “it’s great to know that someone important like Bishop Peter (who’s probably got a lot of things to do) cares enough to come and talk to us”.

Text Box: Dear Parents and Caregivers,
The academic year is drawing to a close and we are preparing for external examinations for the Seniors and Assessment Week for the Juniors.  We urge all students to prepare diligently with a focussed approach to their study.  At Prizegiving and end-of-year Thanksgiving Mass we will recognise the students who have achieved excellence in a variety of fields of endeavour.  There are many other students, however, who will not receive awards who truly exhibit the characteristics of what we value at Sacred Heart College.  These students make a sincere effort with their academic studies, are involved in the wider life of the College, have a positive attitude and are always respectful of others.  My personal thanks go to each of you.  We have many things to celebrate and be thankful for.  It is is because of the contribution made by each member of the school community—students, staff and parents, that we have a school of which we  can be proud.
To the Year 13 students—we hope that Sacred Heart College will always have a place in your heart.  My message to you is to always remember to be true to yourselves, be women of ‘virtue and knowledge’ and never forget the values reinforced during your time at school.
I look forward to seeing you all at our end-of-year Prizegiving and Thanksgiving Mass on December 8.      God Bless—Monica Johnson, Principal

Text Box: Hampton House Hostel Christmas Dinner was held last Thursday night.   Our Chaplain, Mrs Clark, held a small service before dinner. That set the scene for a most enjoyable evening. The dining room was splendidly decorated by Mrs Te-Ripo and Mrs Forde who worked most of the day setting  up.  A big thank you. Barry's cuisine was at its usual best.  Roast beef,  ham on the bone,  roast veges, salads and of course pavlova, ice cream and fruit salad for dessert A magnificent meal! We were delighted to have Sister Muriel with us for the occasion, along with other members of the Hostel Management Board, including Mrs Johnson.  We farewelled our Yr13 students and wished  Davinia Austin-Lobb and Jennifer Eatson well with their future endeavours. A great night was had by all and whilst Christmas is still a wee way off there was a definite Christmas feeling in the Hostel last Thursday.  Merry Christmas everybody!

HBSS Junior Regional Volleyball Championships… On 28 and 29 October, our Junior team played in the Eastern Regional Volleyball Tournament.  Teams came from the Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne regions.  The tournament was a huge success. All our girls played hard and put in a huge effort.  Their Coach, Samantha Lasei-Faitaua, has shown great leadership and coaching skills. She taught the girls many new skills and game strategies—thank you, Samantha.
Our girls won three out of five games in their pool which put them into the semi-final. We came 6th out of 11 teams in  our division.  The girls also did a great job umpiring and scoring for other games and were very responsible and fair competitors.  A big “Rua Pati” to all for their huge effort and commitment.
We now look forward to the Regionals on 10 and 11 November. These are also the play-offs for the Nationals in Palmerston North later this month.  I know the girls will continue to get stronger and improve each game through effort, practise and good coaching.  All the best girls.

Text Box: One of the many delights  I have enjoyed in my two terms at Sacred Heart College has been helping Mrs Wakeling with the Year 12 Recreation classes. I'm totally impressed with the thought and organisation that goes into this, and think the girls are very fortunate indeed to have these opportunities. With my group we've had yoga and pilates classes at school, we have been taught how to play Petanque correctly, swum at the Onekawa Pools, played Putt Putt on the Marine Parade and in our grand finale we went roller blading!   I challenged the girls to a race, and needless to say, I was beaten, but at least I stayed on my feet (or my blades) for the full three laps!
- Dr Soni Laugesen

Text Box: Lydiard Cup … On Friday 4 November six students travelled to Nelson Park, Hastings to compete in the annual Hawke’s Bay secondary schools athletic event, the Lydiard Cup.  The girls who competed were Alexandra Laird, Whitney Burt, Oriwia Solomon, Chelsea Harmer, Danielle Eagle and Eden Boswell-Wakefield.  They all performed very well with Whitney coming second overall in Long Jump and Chelsea coming a close second in the 100m run.

Text Box: House Choir Competition …  This term we held our first Inter-House choir competition and it was successful in getting everyone involved in a fun activity.  We thank Mr Dave Pipe for coming in to be our Judge.  The results:

Text Box: Congratulations to Mr Ashley Brown who completed his three year Diploma in Religious Studies.
“I would like to thank the Board of Trustees and St Mary’s Pastoral Council for their sponsorship, the staff, students and my family for their support and encouragement.  Reflecting on the past three years I feel that although the ’journey’ was at times difficult it has been extremely rewarding and I would recommend the course to any adult.  The opportunity to investigate and develop one’s spiritual dimension is something we should all do.  If there is anyone interested who would like to know more about the course, please feel free to contact me at school or home.”
Mr Brown’s graduation was held last Sunday in Palmerston North.

Text Box: Advent, the Coming
Waiting in Hope, Love, Peace, Joy
Beautiful Are They Who Bring Love
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news.  Isaiah 52:7
It is Christmas!  It is the most wondrous feast—the birthday of the One who came to show us a God of love.  How beautiful are the feet of those who walk the extra step across a room to greet someone with whom they have had differences.  How beautiful are the feet of those who step beyond the material gifts and appreciate the heart of the giver.  How beautiful are the feet of those who move about in the kitchen making the special foods and serving the guests who gather.  How beautiful are the feet of those who not only go to church services but who also fully participate by greeting others joyfully, praying and singing heartily.  How beautiful are the feet of those who walk into homeless shelters or places with little comfort to bring some of their own abundance.
Yes, how beautiful are all those feet who walk with glad tidings this day, with the intention of love in their hearts, for they are living the message of the One who came so long ago.  The Christ of abundant love, born some two thousand years ago, lives on in us.  As our feet take us near and far, let us continue to be the Christ to one another.
Divine Messenger, I will carry the glad tidings of your abundant
and abiding love to all I meet and greet today

Text Box: From the book called Surviving Adolescents: the must-Have Manual for all Parents, by Michael Carr-Gregg, a leading Australian authority on teenage behaviour, the top 5 tactics for girls are worth repeating:
1. Give serious thought to a single-sex school.  This will enable her to grow at her own pace in an environment where gender stereotypes are less of a major factor … In addition, my experience is that staff at single-sex girls schools have a greater understanding of how girls learn, and tend to adapt their teaching styles accordingly.
2. Actively model your value system.  Teach your daughter assertive communication, conflict resolution, and anger management by example.
3. Help her build self-confidence.  Encourage her to set goals, praise her when she’s succeeded, and then set more.  Self-confidence will increase her ability to negotiate the social minefield that is teenage girlhood, and resist peer pressure to take unhealthy risks.
4. Consequential learning is a beautiful thing.  Make sure your daughter is answerable when being nasty.  Explain the consequences if she spreads gossip and let her know from an early age that she is responsible for what she creates in her life.
5. Teach her to treat others with respect.  Almost all teenagers want to “belong” and be respected.  Reassure your daughter that she is under no obligation to be everybody’s friend, but that treating everyone with respect will make her less likely to be a victim of bullying.
