Arts Festival 2009 On Wednesday 22 October we celebrated our annual Arts Festival in our Gymnasium. It was a truly magical evening. The audience was treated to a feast of quality performances from talented vocalists, musicians, actors and dancers. The evening flowed seamlessly thanks to the super organisational skills of our Arts Co-ordinator Sally Rutgers and HOD Arts, Mrs Greville. Coinciding with the Festival, an art exhibition was held in the Cultural Centre. This was also a roaring success. All in all, it was a wonderful event. A big thank you to Sally, all the performers and backstage crew, staff who willingly gave their time, especially Mr Lundall and Mrs Jowet-Morrell and to everyone who attended. |

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau, During the holidays I attended a Conference of Australian and New Zealand Catholic Principals with the theme “Downloading the Gospel of God.” Some compelling speakers highlighted the clash of values that exist between our younger generation (10 to 18 year olds) and those of us who came through school before the ICT explosion and the internet. “Download” today refers to the process of making accessible information through the ICT world, far removed from the Gospel which highlights God’s word on relationships—our relationship with God with our neighbour and with our inner self. Our younger generation spends an average of 1.9 hours a day watching TV and 2.5 hours a day on line. Are you aware of what your daughter is watching, what sites she visits, with whom she is communicating? We must make it important enough to ensure our children have healthy relationships. The challenge for us all is to ensure our children have a healthy balance in their lives, where they are connected to their family, friends and God. Sister Colleen, our Director of Religious Studies (DRS) has announced her retirement from fulltime teaching from the end of this year. Sister has been our DRS since 1991and as a Sister of Our Lady of the Missions she has represented the founding Order of Sacred Heart College. Sister will be on the staff in a part time capacity in 2009. Acknowledgement of Sister Colleen’s contribution to Sacred Heart will occur in the final week of the term; our Mass of Thanksgiving on Thursday 11 December will be a special tribute to her. Mrs Jenny Oliver a parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, and multi talented teacher will commence her duties as DRS in 2009. The Year 11-13 reports, included with this newsletter, highlight the achievement to date in both internal and external assessments and also recommendations for the final examinations. Sustaining regular revision over the next four weeks is essential as is ensuring hand writing is neat and legible in examination scripts. Lunch time and weekend tutorials are being offered by teachers and these extras are special for reinforcing learning. Year 9 and 10 formal examinations in all core subjects will commence on Thursday 13 November; 1 hour duration for Year 9 and 2 hours for Year 10. Students should prepare by revising their year’s work. These examinations provide good practice for NCEA in Year 11 and feedback about teaching and learning for the current year. In the final week of the term prizegivings and Thanksgiving Mass will be special occasions to celebrate our school year and the special people we have among us. I urge your attendance at these events. Election day—November 8—will be a most interesting day for New Zealanders. Many of our Year 13 students will exercise their right to vote for the first time. A statement from the New Zealand Bishops on election issues has been placed on our school website. Pope John Paul II once said, “Every citizen ought to be mindful of their right and their duty to promote the common good by using their vote”
Regards and God’s blessings — Steve Bryan, Principal |

Every human being has spirituality. In order to grow, spirituality needs to be nourished. Being Catholic we acknowledge this special need in order for each person to be the best possible version of themselves that God created them to be.
Through Retreat I create opportunities for students to experience God. This year, Year 10’s Retreat theme was ‘Pray for Peace, Mary’s message for Bernadette and for us.’ These girls, together with Bill Dysart, Whaea Stewart, many other students and staff members of the College pieced together a beautiful mosaic. This mosaic is to bring new life to our sacred Grotto and create an awareness of how important Mary’s message is for us all. You are welcome to come and see our mosaic and spend some time reflecting on the beauty of the Grotto and Mary’s message. Kia tau te rangimarie, - Chanel Hoera, Youth Minister
A Pilgrimage—Sacré Coeur Tour 2010: Initial information has been handed to interested students about this pilgrimage. It is available to students of Sacred Heart Mission schools and is being organized by Lisl Prendergast, Principal of Sacred Heart College, Lower Hutt. The Pilgrimage includes a visit to Oberammergau at the time of The Passion Play. Further information will be distributed as it comes to hand.
Hot Food Day: Form classes had been beavering away for weeks planning their menus for this special annual event. The weather was a little dubious, but the showers stayed away so we could all enjoy the wonderful food prepared. Students were allowed to wear mufti for the day. It was a tremendous effort and we raised $1,550.00 for the Missions. Well done!
Year 12 Church Visit: On Thursday, October 16, Year 12 students visited St John’s Cathedral in Napier and Sacred Heart and St Matthew’s Churches in Hastings. We were studying the different architecture of these churches for our Christian Art, Architecture and Music topic. The girls enjoyed looking at the different styles of buildings and the beautiful stained glass, carved wood work and other art work expressing the faith of the local people. |

Summer sport began last week with our three volleyball teams competing in the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ competition. Many thanks to the teachers in charge—Mrs Koenders, Mrs Stout, and Mrs Wakeling.
We have a softball team this term that plays on a Monday after school. The cost for this covers the school van to transport to games only. There are still spaces available in the team should your daughter wish to join.
Our five tennis teams are competing on Tuesdays after school. Thank you to parents, Mrs Krebs and Mrs Zaloum and teachers, Sister Colleen and Mrs French for their management. For novice players there is coaching at school on Wednesdays after school with Mr Scott. All students are welcome and tennis racquets are available.
Touch begins this week with play on Thursdays at Taraha Reserve, Taradale. Thank you to Miss Arrowsmith for managing this team.
Cricket begins after Labour Weekend after school on Thursdays. Thank you to Mr Marshall for his management skills.
It is important that students participating in these sports are reliable with their attendance at games. Please ensure your daughter does not let the team down through repeated absences.
Our College nominated Hannah Foley (Kayaking) and Ashleigh Neave (Cycling) for the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools’ Sports Awards which will be held on 3 November. Good luck girls!
Congratulations to Abigail Neave who has been selected for the Outward Bound School Leaders’ Programme being held at Anakiwa from 4 to 24 January 2009. Congratulations to Anna Taylor for passing her Bronze Star in Life Saving.
Reminder: Netball and football coaches wanted for 2009. If you can help please ring Mrs French on 8353.761 Ext. 823. We would also appreciate your assistance in other sports.

Congratulations to Sophie Anderson (10SC) who was awarded “Highly Commended” for her creation at the Wearable Arts Awards held at the Pettigrew Green Arena last weekend. Sophie’s inspiration for her garment “Under the Southern Sky”, came from looking into space and thinking about how beautiful the sky is above us. She says the beauty is portrayed in the outfit. Library Corner! We had a very successful ‘Library Week’ at the end of Term 3. Many of the girls participated in the ‘Treasure Hunt’, searching the Library for the answers to the daily questions. Also a large number of students and a number of staff read the writing that some of our staff submitted for our ‘Teachers as Writers Competition’.
Years 9 and 10 had a Trivial Pursuit Competition and this was taken very seriously. I was a little surprised at the gaps in their general knowledge. When they asked, “How are we supposed to know the answers to these questions?” I replied “Read! Read! Read!”
A thought to ponder – “Tell me a fact and I’ll learn. Tell me a truth and I’ll believe. Tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever.” - Maryanne Macintosh-Wright, Library Manager |
