OPEN DAY |

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau, Bishop Peter Cullinane and Kathleen Field, Chaplain at Massey University, visited school last week and shared thoughts with our Year 13 girls on their transition to Tertiary study. Their main guidance was to “stay committed to your spirituality, stay connected to people and church when things get difficult, and look for, listen and feel the presence of God in your life.” It was a special time for our girls. At the weekend, some of our girls received the Sacrament of Confirmation in their parishes; congratulations to them on this self-initiated step in their faith development. Another group of girls are embarking on a sacramental programme for their Baptism and Holy Communion under the guidance of Miss Chanel Hoera, our Youth Minister. Your prayerful intentions for these girls would be of special support. The senior assessment programme is providing important feedback for the girls on their NCEA goals. Reports in early Term 4 will identify pathways for improvement in the final leadup to exams which commence on 19 November. Below is a compilation of tips offered by psychologists and educationalists for parents of students preparing for formal assessments. v Support and positively encourage your child v Provide a supportive family environment v Provide healthy eating snacks v Encourage regular exercise and plenty of sleep v Encourage their self esteem through positive feedback v Acknowledge they need some down time and leave them alone All Year 9 and Year 10 girls will have exams in week 6 of Term 4. These will assess both the girls’ progress over the year and provide them with formal assessment conditions in preparation for NCEA. Winter sports have culminated with finals and representative honours being awarded. Our girls have performed with real distinction this year; a huge thank you to Coaches and Managers for their generous support of college sport. We invite them for a special afternoon tea in the staffroom on October 31. Your presence at exciting nights ahead; Euro City “Girls’ Night Out” 4 October and “Arts Festival” 17 October will give great support to these dimensions of college life. The end of term marks the departure of Mr Mike Perry; we have been celebrating and acknowledging the tremendous contribution Mike has made to Sacred Heart over a long period of time. His replacement as Head of Social Sciences will be Miss Amanda Rutherford, currently teaching at Taradale High School. She will start with us at the beginning of 2008. Dr Soni Laugesen is leaving us early in Term 4 for South East Asia where she is undertaking an English Language Teaching Course. Soni has been a great asset to us across a number of curriculum areas. We wish her all the best in her new learning venture. A whanu hui on October 25 at Te Aranga Marae in Flaxmere will offer an opportunity for familes to share their ideas and expectations about girls’ learning. We look forward to a big turnout. I trust that the holiday break will offer an opportunity for families to share good time together and for all girls to recharge energy levels for Term 4. Regards and God’s blessings — Steve Bryan, Principal

Massey University, Palmerston North Trip: On Wednesday 1 August, four students and Mrs Halford headed to Palmerston North to participate in the Open Day. The main concourse was full of other Yr13 students from around New Zealand. We were given many handouts and then planned our visits to the various parts of the campus, which included visits to accommodation areas and the introductory sessions for the various degrees. It was a great day with plenty of information and inspiration. Victoria University, Wellington Trip: Off to the Capital to explore further tertiary options. Twenty-two students, Mrs Williams and Mrs Halford arrived at Wellywood (our accommodation) in the late afternoon and settled in. Off to explore Wellington in the evening and to find food. No trouble with the Thursday night curfew, many of us were back in our rooms playing cards by 8.30 pm! Friday some went to Massey University to investigate Design Studies, others to Sir George Seymour to look at training in Tourism and Travel and the rest to Victoria University. We arrived into the crowded quad at Vic to listen to an introduction and pick up a guide to the first session we had chosen. We investigated marketing, media, English and many other areas of study as well as checking out the hostel accommodation. The visit gave us a much better idea of Victoria and the study options it provides. On Friday afternoon, we were a very weary, but happy bunch who climbed aboard the bus for the trip home and a much needed nap. —Mrs Halford |

Anna Aldridge represented our College on a discussion panel at the recent Social Justice Seminar held at St Mary’s Parish Centre. Discussion / dialogue was facilitated by Fr Neil Vaney and explored the issues and challenges of climate change and care for the environment that faces each and everyone of us today.
We sadly farewelled our GAP student, Ruth Sobala, who returned to England to begin her studies towards becoming a doctor. Ruth was with us for six months and fitted into our culture extremely well. Here is Ruth in her farewell gift from the College, an All Black rugby shirt. She was over the moon with delight!
Hot Food Day: Form classes had been beavering away for weeks, planning their menus for this special annual event. The weather was magnificent and the scene a picture with staff and students tasting the wonderful food available for lunch. Students were allowed to wear mufti for the day. It was a tremendous effort and we raised $1713.30 for the Missions. Well done! |

The Sports Department wishes to thank all coaches and managers for their time and commitment to our sports teams. Each team has had a voluntary teacher in charge as a manager. On 26 August our College Netball team travelled to the lower North Island Secondary Schools’ Netball Championships in Lower Hutt. There were 28 teams in our ‘B’ grade division. The games were tough but each time we took the court the adrenaline rush gave us the strength to play our hardest as a team. We played nine games. won six, and were placed 10th overall which was a big accomplishment. We are all very proud to have represented our school and have come home a much stronger team. We can’t wait for next year’s tournament - Nivana Manson

A message from your Public Health Nurse …SORE THROATS MATTER! Rheumatic Fever is still a more common disease in Hawke’s Bay than in the rest of New Zealand. There have been several reported cases of Rheumatic Fever in Hawke’s Bay recently. Strep A is often the cause of sore throats in young people. These usually clear with no ill effects BUT in some young people it can cause Rheumatic Fever. All persistent sore throats should be checked by a Doctor. A throat swab should be sent to the laboratory. Correct antibiotic treatment can prevent Rheumatic Fever from developing and it will also prevent the spread of Strep A throat infection to other persons. |
