Briar Greaney’s Art Exhibition An Art Exhibition? Could Briar possibly produce enough work for an exhibition? A daunting task for any artist, most people would agree. It was suggested by Mrs Greville (Head of the Arts) that if an exhibition was planned it would make a challenging focus for Briar's work for the year. Briar chose Art Deco as her subject and she has worked steadily, completing 18 pieces in time for our September date. The painting commanding most attention is a huge picture of the Chrysler building in New York, and the most popular work is a collage of art deco paper dolls. A function to formally open the exhibition was held on Wednesday evening. It was attended by pupils and staff from Sacred Heart College, and many of Briar's family and friends. Success can be measured and applauded by the brisk sales of the work and many people were disappointed when their favourite work had already been snapped up and sold. The exhibition is on show at Creative Mosaic, Taradale, who offer the space free of charge to disabled artists. Briar’s art can be viewed between 10am and 3pm weekdays and will be showing until Friday 3 October. Well done, Briar! |

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau, The recent Baptism of twelve girls and Confirmation of many more is a tremendous witness of our Special Catholic Character alive in the hearts and minds of our community. It is important that we all support these girls in their new sacramental commitments. Attendance at Sunday Mass is a strong weekly renewal of our Faith. Results from the just completed senior assessment programme will now highlight the focus for study as girls prepare for their NCEA exams starting in mid November. To prepare for exams means limiting work commitments. Anything more than 6 hours a week of work will impact negatively on a study programme. Teachers are available to assist with individual study programmes. It is important that parents of students preparing for formal assessments … Support and positively encourage your child Provide a supportive family environment Provide healthy eating snacks Encourage regular exercise and plenty of sleep Encourage their self esteem through positive feedback Acknowledge they need some down time and leave them alone It is sometimes easier to give in to students at this time of the year who barrage you with requests to stay home and study. Please do not make this an option—girls are much better served being at school every day connecting with their learning. Every Year 9 and 10 student has been given a copy of ‘Team Up’ to take home to you. This excellent booklet offers many important links to your daughter’s education. It is a resource that you can tap into time and again for information that is always relevant. Keep it in a handy place. Thank you to so many parents who have recently made payments on their school accounts. Our Bursar, Karen McGrail, is available every day at school to assist you with enquiries. Term 3 has realised a tremendous range of student achievement. The holidays offer an opportunity for everyone to recharge batteries for the culmination of the year in Term 4. I wish you a peaceful and happy time with your family in the coming weeks. Regards and God’s blessings — Steve Bryan, Principal |

Baptism and Confirmation: He aha te mea nui o te ao, he tangata, he tangata, he tangata.
It is always very exciting when there is a new member to the family. Congratulations to these Sacred Heart students who heard the call to be Baptised and make their First Holy Communion this year. Nau mai! Another big celebration and congratulations to more of our students who were Confirmed this year. What a wonderful witness, to stand tall and confirm your faith in Christ. Praise the Lord!
A special thank you to Fr Paul Kerridge, Fr Simon Story and Fr Peter Fahy for their loving guidance. Also to St Patrick’s, St Thomas More, St Mary’s, Sacred Heart and St Peter Chanel Parishes for their warm support. - Chanel Hoera, Youth Minister

Winter sport concluded this week with hockey and canoe polo being the last of the winter sports to be played.
Our top College netball team competed in Palmerston North in the Lower North Island Secondary Schools’ Netball tournament during Tournament Week in wonderful summer conditions. We played nine full games over five days. The girls played very well; it was great for them to experience tournament conditions. We were placed eighth in B Division which is an improvement on last year’s result. Congratulations to our players and team management—Cecilia Rappel (Coach), Carole Boswell (Physiotherapist and Manager) and Charity Nauer (Manager).
We would like to acknowledge and thank all of our sports’ coaches and managers for their commitment and dedication to sport at our College. Without your involvement we would have far fewer sports teams. In saying this, we will be losing our football coach next year and several netball coaches. If you are able to help in these areas next year please ring Henny French on 8353.761 Ext. 823. We look forward to hearing from you.
Summer sports: tennis, touch, junior volleyball and cricket, begin in Term 4. Fees for these sports must be paid before week one of that term. Cricket $10.00 Volleyball $25.00 Touch $25.00 Tennis $7.00
From 3—5 December, Year 10 students will be taking part in the Outdoor Education Programme. This involves day experiences of kayaking, gorging and cliff climbing, or a three day/two night camp at Kuripapango. Further details will be given to your daughter by the end of this term.
Sacred Heart College are hosting both Mission Cup and Te Toa in 2009. We invite offers of accommodation and/or sponsorship for visiting teams, and assistance with catering for a large group of people. Please send any information to Henny French, Sports Co-ordinator on 8353.761 Ext. 823.
Congratulations to Brooke McKelvie who won a bronze medal at the SK8 Zone Olympics recently. |

Congratulations to Jordan Anderson, our BoT Student Representative for 2009. The Board looks forward to working with you next year. Thank you to the other candidates, the canvassing was fast and furious!! - Well done girls. |

Congratulations to Jessica Morgan who received a Silver Medal at the recent Culinary Fair in Auckland. She was one of four Silver medallists from Hawke’s Bay in the high school section and won a $5,000 scholarship. She cooked a dish of poached salmon with salmon and mushroom risotto with a salsa verdē. Mmmmm!!!
Congratulations to Mr Joe Williams, father of Matiriki in Year 13, on his appointment as a Judge of the High Court.
Arts Festival and Art Exhibition: This year, the Art Exhibition that runs in conjunction with the Arts Festival, will be slightly different. As well as this year’s finest Level 1 Folios on display, there will be an exhibition of mainly photographic artworks by selected artists. All these works will be for sale (and very affordable) so bring your chequebooks!! The exhibition will be open between 6.00pm and 7.30pm and then again during the Festival Intermission. All purchased works can be collected at the conclusion of the Arts Festival.
NCEA Performance Assessments: The Music Department provided a special occasion for students being assessed for their NCEA Performance Assessments. We held two concerts on Thursday 18 September in the Cultural Centre. Students performed with a variety of both instrument and musical styles. We were delighted with the support shown by quite a large audience for both concerts. Thanks to the girls for their music-making and to their families for their constant support and encouragement. |

Library Corner! The Library has been buzzing these last few weeks. Our Milo Club has met with a growing number of attendees and we have had some lively discussions about everyone is reading. The girls have helped me decide which books to purchase from a Dymock’s display.
It is very encouraging to see so many of our students getting ‘hooked’ on reading. This term we have been able to present a number of awards to our sensational readers. Anastasia Fincaryk, Brooke Harwood, Inge Hopman, Petra Minehan and Ariana Williams achieved the Pewter Award. Shelah Abdullah, Sarah Sandilands and Jemma Tocker read 25 books to achieve the Bronze Level. Petra read a further 45 books to achieve Silver as did Sarah Cotter and we have two ‘golden girls’, Catherine Joule and Mrs Jowett-Morel who have both read 70 books over the year to achieve Gold. Congratulations to all our ‘Reader Achievers’.
In the final week of the term we are celebrating Library Week with lots of fun activities and spot prizes. We will also have the PTA at school to present the Year 9 students with their own book that they have chosen from the Scholastic “Read 2 Succeed” selection. The girls are very excited about receiving their book so they can enjoy it in the holidays. Thank you to the PTA who have supported this programme, it is such a positive way to help students discover the joys of reading.
Last week we hosted the Dymock’s Secondary School Bookclub meeting. This was a special occasion as all the Secondary School librarians, teachers and parents were invited to hear from our students about what they are reading and enjoying. The evening began with wine and cheese and then the students took centre stage. They were so articulate and convincing and spoke with such enthusiasm about the books they enjoy that we were all convinced we should buy them. It was wonderful to be able to showcase our lovely Library too. - Maryanne Macintosh-Wright, Library Manager |
