Introducing our new Deputy Principal
Mr Steve Bryan

The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of our new Deputy Principal who will begin in Term 1, 2006.  Steve was educated by the Sisters and Marist Brothers of the Hutt Valley.  He then trained and taught as a Primary school teacher. This was followed with a long stint at St Bernard's College (Catholic boys) and he is currently teaching English to senior level at St Oran's Girls' College in Wellington.
Steve is married to Julie and are proud parents of four children. Only the youngest, Meg, and dog, Scooter, will make the shift north.
He and his family have a great love of the outdoors, cultural and sporting activities, in particular rugby having played and coached extensively.
Steve and his family are very much looking forward to the move to the Bay and the exciting challenge of the role of Deputy Principal of Sacred Heart College.  We are also looking forward to him being part of our wonderful team.

Junior Achievement Awards … We are pleased to announce our three Award winners. These awards are designed to encourage excellence in a variety of fields in the Junior School.  The fields are Academic, Cultural and Sporting.  Each award carries a financial reward of $150.00 which is to be used to further the student's progress in that area.  Congratulations to Rebecca McGrail for Academic Excellence, Marina Moke for Cultural Excellence and Alarna McKie for Sporting Excellence.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
As we come to the end of Term 3, thank you for your support during a very busy term. Students and staff are ready for a well earned break.  Our students have been involved in a wide variety of activities, some of which are reported in this newsletter.  From sports tournaments to work experience for our Year 10 classes; from retreats, Science Fair and Maths competitions, to visits to Massey and Victoria Universities; from Pasifika Week to the Super 12 Kapa Haka competition. Our students have had many opportunities to participate and excel academically in extra curricular activities.  At our last Assembly for the term we congratulated those students who were recently confirmed in Napier and Hastings and acknowledged academic excellence.  In particular we celebrated the top junior achievers--Rebecca McGrail, Marina Moke and Alarna McKie.  Also of special note is Catherine Joule who received Distinction in the Australian Maths Competition (93rd percentile)
I am pleased to announce that our application for Enhanced Programme Funding from the Ministry of Education has been successful.  This means that over the next three years we will receive extra funding to continue initiatives to raise achievements for students with moderate learning support needs.  It will involve improving the use of diagnostic data to identify diverse learning needs, continue developing differentiated learning programmes in Years 9 and 10, enhancing the role of the SENCO and Learning Support Team and introducing a 'Reading Together' programme for parents of targeted students.
Special thanks to Mrs Angela McKee for so willingly stepping in and taking over the important role of Director of Religious Studies in Sr Colleen's absence this term and to Mrs Fran Thompson and Mrs Joan Collins for helping out also.
We wish our students and staff a safe and happy holiday and hope that they return on October 10 refreshed for a productive final term .
God Bless-- Monica Johnson, Principal

Congratulations to five of our netball teams for making the finals this year.  They are the Napier Senior A, 9A, 9B and 9C teams and Hastings Green team.  The 9B, 9C and Hastings Green team were winners and the Senior A and 9A teams only lost by one goal.  These great results auger well for the future of netball in our College.  Many thanks to all our wonderful Coaches and Managers for their support over the season.  Congratulations also to our other teams for competing this year in a Fairplay manner.

Enrolments for junior tennis at the Hawke's Bay Tennis Club, Higgins Street, Napier will be on 24 September and 1 October from 9.30am to 11.30am.  The tennis season will commence on Friday, 7 October from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. For more information please visit the club or phone 843.6573.

Cullinane Hockey Challenge … On 4 September, the 1st XI Hockey team travelled to Wanganui.  We were all ready and raring to go.  On the way we stopped for a shopping spree and lunch in Palmerston North and arrived in Wanganui late afternoon.    Our tea that night was absolutely delicious.  The next day we all had mixed feelings about the game but overall we were feeling pretty confident.  Both teams were even but four minutes into the second half we scored a fantastic goal that gave us the win.  All the girls played hard and fair and represented Sacred Heart with pride.  Overall, the exchange was a great success and hopefully next year we will get the chance to defend our winning form.  Thank you to Mrs Wakeling for organising the trip.  --Nicola Duff … 12HD

A Word from Our Chaplain … Bishop Owen's message to our young people who recently received the Holy Spirit into their lives at Confirmation was:  "It's not about me".  He congratulated them on making this commitment--a commitment which goes against the ethos of our 'me first' society.  Choosing to be confirmed as a follower of Jesus is about others.  Just as Jesus came to be a servant to others, so too, our young people were reminded that they are called to serve.  It was refreshing to see our students stand up and be counted.  They carried out their various ministries during the Mass with dignity and care.  Our thanks to all those who helped, and will continue to help them take this step.

Science Fair … Congratulations to all those students who took part in the 2005 Science Fair.  Special thanks to those girls who represented our College in more than one event.  There were Quiz teams, Technology Challenge teams and Senior Chemistry Titration teams.  A big thank you to Mrs Pearce for her support and transport and to Mrs Mitchell for her hard work behind the scenes.

Hot Food Day ...Form classes had been
beavering away for weeks, planning their menus for this
special annual event.
The weather was magnificent and
the scene was a picture with staff and students tasting the
wonderful food available for lunch.   Students were
allowed to wear mufti for the day.  It was a tremendous
effort and we raised $1,400.60 for the Missions.   Well done!

Money for Hot Food Day will go to projects that the
Mission Sisters are involved in such as …

  • One of our New Zealand Sisters is in charge of the
"Rent for Refugees" hospitality house in Winnepeg, Canada, where over the  last 12 months they have had 251 new residents.
  • In Bangladesh the Sisters have opened a snake bite treatment centre and the money goes towards medicines for snake bites.
  • In the Philippines, where Sister Christine Lowther spent many years working, the money goes towards a feeding programme for mal-nourished girls under the Sisters' care.  Through these girls, the Sisters are able to reach out to their families who are also very much in need.
  • In Chittagong, Bangladesh, the Sisters are raising money for a solar system or generator for an orphanage they run.

On Tuesday 16 August, Helena Brown, Kate Perry, Selina Maka, Renee Gregory-Hunt, Morgan Dysart, Ruth Harding, Tara Kelly and Sara-Leigh Nonu went to Palmerston North with Mrs McKee and Mr Brown to attend the Jubilee Mass.  We were joined by other Catholic schools from the Diocese.  It was a most enjoyable day and it was very good to see all the other Catholic schools there and to realise we are part of something very special.

Work Day … The first day back this term was a Teacher Only Day.  Students spent the day working to raise funds for special projects for our College.  We are pleased to announce that at this stage the girls have raised approximately $4,500 which will be used for  shade sails.  Well done girls!
Thank you to our sponsors, especially Whitcoulls and Brent Malone from Direct Importers.

Costumes/Make up:            Lusila Maka       Halaevalu Pailate            Sasha Kapoor

The assistance given to ensure the performance was successful was overwhelming and the support by Sasha, Mrs Kahu and family, Mr Lundall and my family must be acknowledged.  They were there beside me and encouraging the group to reach  performance level.
Every credit must be given to Hukarere College as their performance was outstanding.  The many hours they must have put into their performance was evident and congratulations must be given for their spectacular display.  A big push for Mana Wahine within a very male dominated domain.
Second place was Te Kura Kaupapa O Ngati Kahungunu ki Heretaunga.
Third Place was Hastings Girls' and Boys' High Schools.
Our group had a lot of challenges but the humour of Shanell Fiaui helped us overcome this.  He encouraged the St John's College boys to carry their school name with pride and continued to bring out the best in our girls, a comment emphasized by the judges.
Many thanks go to the staff in both schools and whanau who helped with the boys' costumes, allowing me to carry out my part as tutor.  God bless you all for all your help.  I could not have done this on my own

Board News … The IT upgrade is now very evident around the school.  The 11 new computers have been purchased and these along with 19 leased ones, all with LCD screens, are in the main computer suite 504.  In the Tech. Suite, 7 ex-corporate computers take the number to 27 to enable classes to book and use the room as required.  Another 23 have been distributed to classrooms to upgrade, or set up in areas where there was no computer.  All classrooms now have at least 1 computer.  The cabling is now complete throughout the whole school.  Preparation is under way for the new fileserver which will be installed in the holidays.  This will involve all computers in the school, as well as the laptops, being re-configured.  Our Informations Systems Manager, Alison Ward, once again is to be commended for her huge effort organising this upgrade.

Should we weep for our sheep?  The Yr9 debating team felt really strongly about this and convincingly put their affirmative case forward, which resulted in their victory against Hastings Girls' High.  They are ready to tackle their next debate against Napier Boys' High--"That there is too much froth in our coffee".  Debating involves perseverance, dedication and teamwork in order to eloquently argue your case--invaluable skills for life! - Charmaine Naidoo

Library Week
During the last week of term we celebrated Library Week. Our objectives were to get as many of our students into the Library and to have some fun and to encourage them to take out reading for the holidays we gave a lolly with each book issued.  We also ran a special fun Library Trivial Pursuit competition with junior classes.  The highlight of the week was the display in the foyer featuring photos of staff members when they were children, together with copies of their most loved books from childhood.  A competition was run for the girls to identify the photos.  We also invited the staff for morning tea to give them the opportunity to select some holiday reading.  All in all it has been a very successful week, enjoyed by both staff and students.--

Have You Made the Connection Yet?
Have you got Sacred Heart College listed on your Telecom account?  It is simple to connect and means that the school receives points that can be used to purchase electronic goods, e.g. IT hardware, audio/visual.  We have recently been able to purchase a new lazar printer/fax/scanner for the office by using this scheme.  Forms are available at the office.

Telephone Reminder: Students may use the telephone in the school office at a cost of 20 cents--only in an emergency.  Cell phones must be turned off and kept out of sight during the school day.
