Text Box: Dear Parents, Caregivers, Whanau—
Recently a Sacred Heart group, including three Year 12 girls, attended the biannual Catholic Schools’ Convention in Wellington.  The theme of “Radiating HOPE, Challenging our times” resounded through keynote speakers, seminars and liturgies.  The message that we are all agents in ensuring that authentic quality Catholic education is delivered to the new generation of Catholic young people was proclaimed. Quality Catholic education involves quality care for our girls at all times.  With the holiday period looming it is especially important that the safety and wellbeing of the girls is promoted and given focus by us all when they are in social situations.  At school we have been sharing prayerful, reflective times where the dignity and wellbeing of each of us is highlighted.
In Term 4 the College will receive visits from the Education Review Office and the Catholic Education Office as they both review teaching and learning practices, and the Special Catholic Character within the College.  Their reports will offer us areas in which we can strategically plan for in the coming years.
The draft New Zealand Curriculum Document is on the school website at www.sacredheartnapier.co.nz.  I encourage you to take some time to become familiar with it, and question the proposed values and key competencies that will underpin the curriculum of our school.   You will receive an opportunity to share your ideas as part of the consultative process before we submit our feedback at the end of November.
If you are the parent of a Year 11-13 girl, you will receive with this newsletter a report indicating your daughter’s recent examination results.  A more detailed analysis will be sent in Term 4 but for now this will highlight the progress and/or  revision pathways necessary in the next eight weeks before public examinations.
We welcome Mrs Rebecca Pearce back to the staff at the beginning of Term 4 from her maternity leave and the birth of her beautiful daughter, Evie.  Miss Kirstin Daly begins her maternity leave early in Term 4.  This is all good news for future enrolments at Sacred Heart!  Congratulations to Mrs Sue Wakeling on being the recipient of a Teacher’s Study Award and to Mrs Angela McKee for her N.Z. Science, Mathematics and Technology Teacher Fellowship.  Both ladies will undertake these full time study awards in 2007.
As you receive this newsletter I will be in France with Sister Colleen on pilgrimage tracing the origins of the Mission Sisters who founded our College.  I look forward to sharing with you the experiences of this wonderful opportunity afforded to me.
As Spring flourishes, may all of your senses be filled with the glory and wonder of our God.
Best wishes — Steve Bryan, Principal

Text Box: Hot Food Day—Form classes had been
beavering away for weeks, planning their menus for this special annual event.  The weather was magnificent and the scene a picture with staff and students tasting the wonderful food available for lunch.  Students were allowed to wear mufti for the day.  It was a tremendous effort and we raised approximately $1,600 for the Missions.  Well done!

Text Box: Junior Social— Our combined Sacred Heart and St John’s College Junior Social was held on Friday 8 September in the Gymnasium.  The theme this year was “Retro” and by all accounts, everyone had a wonderful time.

Text Box: (Right to left) Sisters Mary Gabriel, Antoniana Maria and Mary L Concepta, Sisters of Life from New York visited our College on Monday 18 September to promote the value of life.  They are visiting New Zealand for two weeks and spent the day speaking to our Year 9, 11 and 12 students.

Text Box: God, Friends, Chocolate and Forgiveness
Year 9 girls have been great to retreat with! Our theme was friendship…and yes, God and chocolate go well together…a win win combination.
There were some quiet and reflective moments which the girls found worthwhile. Almost every girl commented on how meaningful the Reconciliation experience was.
“When the priest forgave me my sins it felt like God was there.”
“This was my first Reconciliation and so the experience was the most important part of the day.”
When the girls thanked Father, they gave him some chocolate which, to their delight he gave back to them to share, explaining how the giving and receiving of gifts is an integral part of our Catholic Mass and sacramental celebration.
Of course no retreat is complete without the “not so quiet” times. In group discussions we thought about the qualities of a true friend and we even had emails from God telling us how he wants us to “love one another” as he loves us.
It continues to be a real privilege to be part of our girls retreat experience.

Rachel Doohan and Sarah Mills who passed their Grade 7 Ballet exam with Distinction
Our success at sPACIFICally Pacific: Months of planning, practising and hard work saw our Pasifika students achieve some wonderful results in the recent sPACIFICally Pacific 2006 competition.  Sacred Heart students were represented in all the speech and writing categories.  This year there was a Fashion Design category and a ’Bring it On’ dance competition for Hip Hop which was a very popular event with our students who put together a great routine under the guidance of Elaine Muliipu-Finai and Kona-i-Holeva Pailate.  The week of events finished with the Cultural Festival and once again our students combined the Pasifika cultures and presented a wonderful item.  Our two leaders, Samantha Lasei-Faitaua and Lagi Farani-Tuisalega worked very hard with the organising committee to put on a wonderful celebration of their cultures.
Our winners this year: Rose Faletutulu– Junior Samoan Speech and Junior Writing; Sue Seumanutafa—Junior English Speech and Junior English Writing; Patricia Maka—Junior Tongan Speech; Grace nee Harland—School Fashion Design.  Selina Maka was second in the Senior Tongan Speech and Ma’ata Moata’ane was third in the Tongan Writing Competition.—Well done girls!

Five students attended a “Sport Ambassador Session” on 12 September.  The presenters were Cory Hutchings and Danyon Loader and the interactive session was based on helping young people achieve their goals and developing attitudes to succeed in the sporting arena through the motivation and inspiration of elite athletes.  All our girls had an excellent experience.  Thank you to SPARC for instigating this very worthwhile initiative.  We believe the idea is first rate and hope that future opportunities will be made available to more students around the country.  Cory and Danyon were excellent presenters and role models for our girls.

Cross Country:  What an incredible success this year’s cross country was with an impressive amount of enthusiastic participants.  The Juniors were the first group to run and even though they took off in the wrong direction, once they were back on track they ran a great race.  Our Junior winner was Ashleigh Ennor. The Intermediate record of 14 mins 45s was broken by Alexandra Dickenson in 14 mins 27s followed by Veronica Noetzli with 14 minutes 32. Our Senior race began more smoothly and was won by Kate O’Malley in 14 mins 58s breaking the Senior record of 15 mins 24s.  Despite a strong head wind on some legs of the course, the day was brilliant and everyone had a fun time.    - Danielle Turner 13WS

In these individualised courses students are able to gain credits towards NCEA levels 1, 2 and 3. The Gateway programme requires students to complete work-ready assessments prior to a work placement. Courses studied include unit standards towards National Certificates, e.g. Retail, Hairdressing, Equine Industry, Business Studies and Child Care Education.
The STAR programme has a classroom based course which leads to the National Certificate in Tourism and Travel along with opportunities to attain credits in other industry areas.
