MUSIC & CULTURE

CHORAL MUSIC
Sacred Heart College has a strong tradition of school singing and all students have the opportunity to participate in the school choirs which take part in the annual regional choral festival.

ORCHESTRA
Sacred Heart College has a school orchestra which gives students who learn musical instruments the opportunity to play at school functions.

MUSIC GROUPS
Students have the opportunity to take part in a range of music groups from chamber music ensembles to rock bands with a view to participating in secondary schools’ annual events such as the chamber music contest and “Rock Quest”.  Lessons are available for individual students and small groups in percussion, strings, woodwind, piano, singing and guitar.

MUSIC MENTORING
Senior music students assist in tutoring pupils from St. Patrick’s School in instrumental performance.

PUBLIC SPEAKING AND DEBATING
Sacred Heart’s Oral Communication programme is extended into students’ participation in Nga Manu Korero speaking competitions, and the local secondary schools’ debating competition.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION
Sacred Heart College stages a drama or musical production approximately every two years, usually in conjunction with St John's College. Recent productions include Oliver, The King and I and Back to the 80s.

ARTS FESTIVAL
In alternate years to the School Production, Sacred Heart College showcases its talented students in visual and performing arts with our annual Arts Festival.

KAPA HAKA
This group welcomes visiting groups to the school and performs at provincial and national events.

TANGATA PASIFIKA
The school has a strong Polynesian group that meets regularly and performs each year at school functions and at local festivals.

O’SHEA SHIELD
Each year students with a talent for acting, public speaking and debating are encouraged to compete against other Catholic schools from the Wellington and Palmerston North Dioceses for the O’Shea Shield.

CREATIVE WRITING
There are many opportunities for young writers to enter competitions, or write articles for the local newspaper, the school magazine or newsletter.

VISUAL ARTS
There is a spacious, well-resourced Art Room and a room equipped with computers and specialised software for senior students of Design and (Digital) Photography.
