Sporting Highlights 2021

The term that was... Term 1 Sporting Highlights

From the Sports desk

Term 1 sport has seen many SHC girls competing and representing our school with heart. We have enjoyed successes from teams and individuals which has allowed our girls to gain experience and achievement in their chosen sport.

Courtney Beams – sports prefect for 2021 put a wero ‘challenge’ to our student body at the beginning of term using the motto, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you”, as motivation to our girls to try their hardest, explaining; “Our challenge to you all is to try and put yourself out there and try something new in all aspects of high school life”.

Trials for Hockey, Football and Netball are all but done and winter sports teams are beginning their trainings to be ready for a term 2 start. Thank you to all parent coaches and staff who have helped with this process. Term 2 will see our Netball, Hockey Football, Badminton and Basketball girls all take the sports fields and courts so please get out and support our teams. Term 2 will also see the introduction of Pilates/Yoga, Fitness and Zumba sessions offered over a few lunchbreaks each week. As we will need outside providers for this, there will be a charge per session for each student and depending on numbers may only be able to partake in x1 option as numbers will be capped. If you know of anyone who may be keen to provide these sessions, please let me know bprice@sacredheartnapier.school.nz

Sports events and tournaments:

Canoe Polo

Our Senior Canoe polo team of Tessa Coory, Helena Street, Hannah Rich, Annabel Koko-Price, Emily Kelly-Lowe, Georgia Kerins, Emily Deihl and Michaela Symonds have had a busy term 1 competing in several competitions, beginning with the HBSS regional qualifiers and came and incredibly well-earned 3rd place. Georgia Kerins was also the highest goal scorer in the Senior Girls league with 13 goals. The girls then travelled to Christchurch for the first round of B grade Nationals, finishing with the NZSS Nationals in Hawke’s Bay coming 5th place overall in the competition which is a great achievement. Their final game against Taradale High School went into overtime as they were drawn at full time so was a nail-biting finish!  Well done to all the girls who played and to all the supporters who came down to cheer them on.

Waka Ama

Sacred Heart College students competed in the Waka Ama regionals earlier this term. Te Amokura Watson came 1st and Reed Smith came 2nd in J16 girl’s division and Kelly Minehan came 1st in J19 girls division singles. Following on from that, Te Amokura Watson took on the challenge of paddling in the singles event at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Waka Ama Nationals, in Rotorua. After a hard first race, she managed to book a place in the Plate semi. During this race she got a personal best time of 1:28 and secured a spot in the Plate final. Te Amokura made huge improvements during each race and finished the day off in 5th place overall.

Rowing

Stevie Taylor competed at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Rowing Nationals in the singles event. Stevie raced strong and competed against some of the best secondary school age rowers – no small feat. Well done Stevie, we are proud of your efforts and for representing SHC at Maadi.

Rugby Gala Day

On Thursday 8th April we had x13 girls form SHC take part in the Unison Switch Gala Day run by HB Rugby and HB Netball where girls played Rugby and boys played Netball ranging in ages from year 3 and 4 to U18’s. It was a fantastic day with our girls representing SHC on the Rugby field. There was some strong competition, but our girls held their own and after bonding in the first couple of games through losses, they were able to cement some excellent try’s and get a win and a draw. A big congratulations to Amber Wright who was awarded Player of the Day for her ‘team first’ approach and playing some solid Rugby the whole day. A big thank you to Nico Putter who came along to coach and ref games for the day and to Santana Mitchell for being a great captain. Well done girls, I hope this is the beginning of seeing our very own SHC Rugby team out there this year competing.

Codes: HBSS competitions

Futsal

Our x3 Futsal team have all had a great term 1 with some very competitive games. The Junior team are in the final being played on Tuesday evening and our Senior 1 team is playing off for 3rd and 4th. Thank you to Cushla Thomas, Mrs Kelly and Mrs Brassington for managing the teams this term.

Volleyball

Our Senior A Volleyball team have had the experience of being in the Division 1 competition this term which has been a huge step up. They have managed to play some great Volleyball and learn more about the game and what is involved in the higher grade. Our Senior B team have also had a great term 1 playing and learning some new Volleyball skills with the bonus of having a group of keen Junior Volleyball players jump in and play. Well done to a solid effort during this term girls, we are proud of you. Thank you to Mr Edwards and Verona Sio for coaching our teams, we appreciate your support.

Tennis

This term we were able to re-introduce Tennis back in to SHC with an increase in number of girls who signed up. We had x2 teams in the Junior and Senior grades and introduced Tennis coaching which the girls really enjoyed. Thank you to Duane Redward, Brad Seymour and David Reynolds for your support of our teams this term.

Cricket

This term we had x6 keen Cricketers form a team with NGHS and we were lucky enough to have Mr Silverwood coaching the team. Our girls had a great season and enjoyed being able to get our every Thursday and play some Cricket. We would love to see our numbers grow in this sport, so if you are keen to give Cricket a go in term 4, please make sure you come along, we always welcome new players.

Touch

The Touch Rugby girls have come a long way as a team this term. We were fortunate to have Nico Putter give up his time to coach the girls every Wednesday lunchtime and a big thank you to Mrs Grapes for managing the team. The first four games were incredibly challenging, but the girls stuck it out with training and finally earnt their 6-3 win in the final round of the season. They have learnt a lot about what it means to show sportsmanship and humility when the game is not going their way and what it means to work together as a team.
