A Sacred Heart College student has earned international honours, contributing to New Zealand’s podium finish at the 2025 Canoe Polo Oceania Championships.
Year 12 student Seven Robinson (Ngāti Kahungunu) was part of the Under 21A Junior Paddle Ferns team that claimed bronze at the tournament, held on Australia’s Gold Coast in April.
“The weather wasn’t great, but the experience was amazing,” Seven said. “There was really strong team bonding, and it was just good playing with a great group of girls.”
At just 16, Seven was one of the youngest members of the national squad. She played a key attacking role, scoring seven goals across the campaign.
The tournament marked the end of the Oceania cycle, but she is already training for her goal of making the World Championships, which are set to be held in Germany next year.
“It’s a big step up, but it would be amazing to be selected,” she said.
Seven began playing canoe polo in Year 6 and now competes for the Hawke’s Bay A2 regional team, having progressed through B3 and B1 in previous seasons. She was also part of Sacred Heart’s senior canoe polo team, which placed fifth at the national secondary school championships this year.
While continuing to play, Seven has taken on coaching responsibilities, mentoring junior players and supporting the school’s senior team.
“There’s a growing number of younger girls taking up the sport,” she said. “I coached an under-14s team last year for Hawke’s Bay, and quite a few of them are now at Sacred Heart. It’s been cool to see that grow.”
She credits her teachers and the wider school community for their support. “They’ve been really understanding, coming to games, watching livestreams, and offering extra support in the classroom when I’m away for competitions.”
Seven also plays in Sacred Heart’s First XI hockey team and says sport has always been a major part of her life.
“Hockey was actually my main sport until a few years ago but I just really enjoyed the challenge and intensity of canoe polo.”
Sacred Heart College Principal Maria Neville-Foster said they are so proud of Seven and everything she’s achieved.
“It is a fantastic result for Seven and shows her dedication, perseverance, and the quiet leadership she brings to everything she does. She’s generous with her time, committed to her goals, and a wonderful role model who reflects the values of Sacred Heart College.”
